Rental Car Advice

MichTraveler

Recommended Posts

After much research and consideration, we finally booked Tahiti for March/2006. Rumors of April/2006 schedule change caused us to "just do it".

Now more research ;-)

We may want to rent a car on several of the islands. We would probably reserve in advance. Do we need any special driving permit or license? We have Michigan driver's licenses.

Any other advice on driving in the islands?

Hi! I had a Michigan DL too, when we were in FP, no special permits needed. :)

Which islands are you thinking of renting a car in? We visited on a land vacation, but did not reserve cars in advance (we were able to rent them through hotel kiosks). Also, the fun cars are less expensive, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend them. The first one we rented broke down about a mile from the rental desk, it was a pain to drive (only 2 gears) and was as loud as a lawnmower. It was, um, interesting. ;) On Moorea we rented a full size car with AC, it was a very welcome change.

Congrats on booking your cruise, it will be fabulous!
