gumballz Posted March 8, 2012 #1 Share Posted March 8, 2012 I will be in the Netherlands for a land vacation and am considering adding a cruise onto my vacation, since I'll be there anyway. I was looking at the Norway cruise on the Brilliance, that leaves from Amsterdam. My question is this (for anyone that has been on both cruises): Is the cruise to Norway similar to a cruise to Alaska? I know they're two totally different places....but I mean is cruising to Norway a similar experience as cruising to Alaska? I've been on an Alaskan cruise and loved it. So beautiful and relaxing. Is that what I should expect from the Norway cruise? Cold with breathtaking scenery? Here's the itinerary: Amsterdam Sea Alesund, Norway Geiranger, Norway Flam, Norway Bergen, Norway Sea Amsterdam Thanks in advance!
Sequim88 Posted March 8, 2012 #2 Share Posted March 8, 2012 Have not done Norway (yet) but after extensive research of Norway and Baltic cruises and "flying" the routes using GoogleEarth I would say the only place on an Alaska cruise that is similar to the Norway fjords would be near Ketchikan at Misty Fjords National Park. If you have done that excursion then Norway will be similar but a LOT more. GoogleEarth is a great tool for pre-viewing places and getting a ground level viewpoint. Rare NorbertsNiece Posted March 8, 2012 #3 Share Posted March 8, 2012 I've been to Geiranger. Took my breath away. As did Alaska.
aarrcc2 Posted March 9, 2012 #4 Share Posted March 9, 2012 We've done 8 cruises to Alaska and 2 to Norway (one all the way to North Cape) in the last 9 years. Obviously we love the scenery in both but I would say since you're already in Europe, do the Norway cruise while you are there. Agree with previous poster about similarity of Misty fjords in Alaska, as well as Tracey Arm in Alaska but the Norwegian fjords are truly, special! See them while you are in Europe: you won't be sorry!
