Anyone used Voxer or another app to communicate on the ship?

I want to allow DD13 some freedom but stay in contact. Definitely do not want to run up a huge cell bill. I was thinking of getting a WiFi package and using my iphone and her ipod to check in with each other. Has anyone done this with Voxer or another texting type app?

Wifi onboard is extremely slow, and generally doesn't have the bandwidth to support VoIP apps. Plus the login and logout procedures will eat up your minutes very quickly, even if it does work.

Get some walkie-talkies.

We bought walkie talkies for about $40 on amazon. Check the reviews and make sure you get some with a range of 20+ miles...there's a LOT of metal on the ships and if you want them to work well the signal needs to have range. :)
