duirwaigh Posted April 24, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 24, 2012 we'll soon be on a cruise with a stop in livorno. we would like to know the most economical way to get to florence and back. is there is a train or bus? - and where to go first when getting off the ship? the idea would be to end up somewhere in the heart of florence where we can start taking the hop-on, hop-off bus. thanks in advance :-)
euro cruiser Posted April 24, 2012 #2 Share Posted April 24, 2012 There are dozens of posts on this forum detailing how to take the train from Livorno to Florence. The key points are: You have a choice about how to get to the train station (at Piazza Dante, about two miles from the port). You can pay for a shuttle bus to Piazza Grande, followed by a 1.5 mile walk to the train station or a local bus, or you can take a taxi right from your ship. I suggest the taxi for both ease and speed (a taxi can be shared by up to six people). The train from Livorno Centrale to Firenze (Florence) takes between an hour and twenty minutes to an hour and forty, depending on the train. The fare is Euro 8,20 each way. The train station in Florence is Santa Maria Novella, right in the heart of the historic area. Everything most tourists want to see is within a mile of the station and much of the area is pedestrian only. A HOHO bus in Florence would take you further away from the sites due to strict limitations on vehicles in the historic center.
