Grand Cruise South America Questions

Thanks Dorothy...Wasn't aware that the pillow gifts were so elaborate..Figured just a few more tiles, plates or key chains to add to our collection..LOL..We've never taken a grand cruise, so didn't know about the duffle either..

Don't get your heart set on "elaborate" pillow gifts. They were very nice on my 2010 Grand Voyage on the Amsterdam, but on the 2012 Prinsendam, it appeared that those gifts took some cost cutting hits. The platter/plate was significantly smaller, the duffle was half the size of the first one, nothing as nice as in the past.

You may want to check out www.accessamerica.com ---- our policy carries a benefit of $ 1 Million for Emergency Medical Transportation.

Thanks, I actually tried that but had no luck with Insuremy trip.com..

Does your policy specifically say they will evacuate you to The Hospital of Your Choice, which is what I'm looking for ? It probably would be in the fine print in the evacuation clause..LOL

When I insert our ages into "Insure my trip.com" the only policy which comes up is Travel Guard & even that has a caveat which says:

Quote: The Insurer will pay: (a) Reasonable and Customary Charges for medical services required for evacuation to the nearest adequate medical facility of the Insured’s choice or home (if medically required). This service will be arranged only if the Insured’s Physician determines that evacuation is necessary; (b) Reasonable and necessary charges for escort expenses required by Insured, if the Insured is disabled during a Trip, and an escort is recommended, in writing, by the attending Physician;

And the coverage is only up to $50,000...Just for this policy alone the cost is $1900..Therefore our total insurance for this trip, could be over $4000. Guess, we'll have to decide if we should just buy the basic policy for a little over $2,000, then take our chances & be ready to self insure for emergency evacuation home..

Will also check with our private Insurance Co to see if they will pay when Medicare doesn't..

You have to be a Philadelphia Lawyer to understand some of these policies..

Med Jet Assist will does not seem to cover anyone over 74 years of age..

I'm still looking for Emergency Evac Insurance to the Hospital OF Our Choice, but doubt we'll find it unless we pay thousands of $$$..

Thank you..

Cheers...:)Betty

P.S. Found a blurb which said Med Jet Assist has policy's which might cover us for the 68 day trip, but I'll have to call them..

My husband is 80+. We have found that once you begin to age, the insurance costs are awful. But the evacuation costs can also be awful if you have to be helicoptered off the ship, as we saw happening last year.

We just go ahead and use HAL's platinum because age is not a factor in the cost.

I, too, have spent lots of time researching insurance. We are using HAL's platinum plan primarily for the trip cancellation coverage. This is not a trip we want to self-insure. I did finally call insuremytrip yesterday and talked with a very knowledgeable person and she had some excellent suggestions re supplemental medical & evac coverage. Costs seem to run between $500 and $1600. Most of these plans will not let you purchase more than 6 mos. out and some do cover pre-existing conditions. Also found some helpful information on squaremouth.com. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info,,Will give "Insure my trip" a call..We're actually purchasing ourTravel-ex policy through the Agent, as he doesn't have to put our ages in..This is exactly the same policy I've purchased on-line before but when we purchase it on-line DH's age is a factor.. DH is 82 & once the Psgr gets to be 80 & over, insurance is quite high.. I'm doing a lot of investigating now to see if we can get some type of policy at a reasonable cost for Med Evac to a hospital of our choice.. If necessary we can take our chances & self insure that potion only, but still keep the basic travel-ex policy..

When we were on the Prinsendam last time & had an evacuation in Manaus of a CC Poster's Mom.. Her story scares me..
