camtran Posted April 30, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 30, 2012 My son asked me to post a question on here. He would like to know if you can rent snorkeling equipment in Progresso? If so how is the snorkeling? About how much does it cost to rent the equipment? If you had the choice would you snorkel in Progresso or Cozumel? Thanks! Rare skittl1321 Posted April 30, 2012 #2 Share Posted April 30, 2012 Can only answer the last question. Between Progresso and Cozumel- snorkel in Cozumel! Progresso is on the Gulf of Mexico, and the water is somewhat muddy. The snorkeling is not nearly as good as Cozumel, which is on the Caribbean sea, and the clearest water I've ever seen (I've previously snorkeled in St. Thomas and Antigua, and both were also beautiful). Snorkel in Cozumel! You can have a fun beach day in Progresso, and swim and such- but the snorkel outing should be Cozumel for sure. (We went to Mayan Ruins in Progresso- pretty amazing.) hdawson Posted April 30, 2012 #3 Share Posted April 30, 2012 Snorkling is not good in Progreso because the Yucatan state sits on a limestone shelf and the movement of the water creats a murkeyness. Save the snorkling for Cozumel.
maldenmusic Posted April 30, 2012 #4 Share Posted April 30, 2012 Yes I agree that the water clarity isn't as good as it needs to be for snorkeling in Progreso.
WilliamLawson Posted May 1, 2012 #5 Share Posted May 1, 2012 How about a trip to the cenotes and snorkeling there?
kestrel Posted June 9, 2012 #6 Share Posted June 9, 2012 Cozumel is a better place to snorkel. There are many places for you to rent snorkeling gear though many people (including myself) prefer to carry their own. Progresso is the port to visit very famous Mayan ruins such as Chichen Itza or Uxmal.
ebpope@gmail.com Posted July 14, 2012 #7 Share Posted July 14, 2012 I didn't think cenotes were good for snorkeling. I thought they were just deep holes w/o features other than maybe rocks below their surfaces. Is the snorkeling good? ;)
