Is it possible to do a tour to BVI and THE BATHS from the carnival dream. It seems like all the outside tours want to pick you up around 8am and our ship does not get in until 10am. any suggestion?

Try asking your question here, it is specific to St. Thomas and will yield many answers. It also may have your answer in a thread there.

Definitely do this on your own, very easy. Just grab the earliest ferry (walk to the ferry dock to the left of the ship) and when you arrive talk to a taxi driver and have him drop you at the Top of the Baths. Have him return to get you in 2 or 3 hrs. Walk down to the Baths and enjoy your time there.

If time allows have the driver drop you at the Mineshaft and pick you up in an hour, the Mineshaft is a restaurant/bar near the old copper mine not far out of your way. The panoramic views are amazing and their signature drink the Cave In is great - "It's all in the Juice, Mon!".

Then head to Spanichtown which is near the ferry dock and shop a little before walking to the ferry.

Not sure what day you're on Tortola but here's the ferry schedule, $30pp roundtrip, the taxi won't be too bad and definitely makes the experience much nicer. The ferries leave Tortola at 10, 10:30, & noon so the 10:30 would be great if you can get there. There's also another person at the dock that apparently provides transportation at a good price, check the posts on the Tortola forum to find that info.

If you don't have time for the Mineshaft there's a restaurant at the Top of the Baths as well as the Poorman's bar on the beach.

Enjoy your day!
