Riviera vs Silhouette

So many of you have sailed Celebrity so I was hoping for some advice.

Both sailings are 10 ten days at the end of October in the Med. Similar itineraries.

I have a sky suite GTY. I could have an Outside cat C GTY on Riviera.

The difference in price taking into consideration the air promo w/Oceania (basically worth $800 pp) is about $650.

Given the weather and the temps, I am not worried about loosing the balcony.

Thanks!

Hmmmmm...

Is the Riviera $650 MORE? Or LESS? Is that per person? Or Total?

I like BOTH ships...

Each has good points and bad points (of course, none of the bad are all that bad, but, you know what I mean)...

Twice the number of people on Silhouette...but also twice the space...

Obviously, some little differences--like formal nights for example--but you need to decide what is important to you...

I think BOTH are great ships...

What would likely decide it for me is the Sky Suite versus a Cat C...

Sky Suite is bigger, has butler service, more amenities..and the balcony...You may think you won't use it much, but you never know the weather...and, to me, it just gives me the feeling of having even more space...

Assuming you are getting that Sky Suite for LESS than the Cat C, to me that might ice it...AND, if you are willing to get a smaller cabin with no butler service and no balcony, how much would you save if you downgraded that Silhouette deal to a standard balcony...or even an ocean view?

OTOH, I love the specialty restaurants on Riviera, not having to deal with formal nights and a few other aspects of Oceania...

Obviously, a tough call...

I have been on Eclipse and Marina -- similar comparison

Both are beautiful ships.

There is MUCH more to do and there are more venues on a Celebrity ship -- not a good or bad thing -- just a difference. The O cruise will be more laid back; there will be some music and entertainment but nowhere near the level of Celebrity. The buffet on Riviera (like the Marina) will be unbeatable but I prefer the specialty restaurants on Celebrity to those on O.

I hate the formal nights but they can be avoided by going to the buffet, specialty restaurants or ordering room service. You really do not need to be as "formal" as some on the Celebrity boards would like you to believe.

You cannot go wrong with either -- both wonderful cruise experiences but very different in "feel."

:)I have enjoyed my time spent on both cruise lines, but, and this is an important but - Oceania excels in all areas except entertainment, but this may have been remedied according to recent posts. You go and have fun whichever you choose!

Jacqueline,

Cruised on Marina (Riviera sister ship) last year and Silhouette in January. After 6 'O' cruises we were concerned about Silhouette's size, formal nights and other differences well documented on CC. Our concern was unfounded. Yes there were quite a number of differences but nothing too concerning. The large buffet restaurant (can't remember the name) was a total zoo compared with the Terrace Restaurant on Marina. However on Silhouette we had an Aqua cabin and their Aqua Restaurant was superb. We eat there most of the time. We only eat at one speciality restaurant on Silhouette and it also was superb. We eat in the main dining room only twice and we found it crowded with waiting lines for a tables.

Like you we are not big on the entertainment and casino side of things. Our interest is the itinerary, service, food and cabin in that order.

Of course the speciality restaurants cost extra on Celebrity so that will eat into your $650 saving. There is no extra charge on Riviera for their 4 speciality restaurants and we really enjoyed all of them on Marina. We had a A Cat cabin on Marina which was pretty much the same as Aqua class. Both cabins were very satisfactory and we had previously had PH cabins on our other 'O' cruises.

Whichever you choose I don't think you will be disappointed.

On my transatlantic the evening buffet had a "zoolike" quality as well. Very crowded. Not enough tables at times. Buffet on Marina was so awesome (lobster tails every night) that many people never went to the GDR (which has been criticized for slow service and mediocre food).

That $650 difference is between a suite and and an outside. My experience is that O is usually twice as expensive as Celebrity -- the difference is thousands when you compare similar cabins. I usually get prepaid gratuities on O from my TA, but I get a HUGE OBC if I sail Celebrity, making it even cheaper.

I sail both lines and love them both. There are no bad choices here. ENjoy
