another newbie question re:booking while onboard

I've read in these posts several people talking about booking their next cruise while on board. What kind of extras do they offer while on board if you go ahead and book again?

 

We think we'll probably do another one in the near future but I'd like to know now and kind of get something in mind if it will be advantageous to book while on board instead of later when we return.

It has varied over the years, used to be a set % reduction in fare, but now the amount varies from cruise to cruise, and within categories of cabins selected. As well, sometimes I have been on and there was a shipboard credit for the booked cruise in addition to the reduction. I don't recall that offer on my last cruise, however. I have almost always found it worthwhile to do. If you cancel, you will have a penalty, but that can be credited if you pick another cruise within a.
