maximus217 Posted June 7, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 7, 2012 We are planning to book Aft Sky Suite (S1) on Celebrity Silhouette, and we would like to know if there is any Aft S1 that the port hole windows are obstructed and also which deck should you choose in order to avoid any soots. Thank you. :)

maximus217 Posted June 7, 2012 Author #4 Share Posted June 7, 2012 Thanks for the picture. Was the port hole window obstructed and did you get any soots on the balcony? :)
hillsprint Posted June 7, 2012 #5 Share Posted June 7, 2012 We stayed in 8336 and there was no obstruction in the window. Yes on all the aft balconies there is a chance of soot, but on our cruise there was very little soot on our balcony. Hope that helps
Gonzo70 Posted June 7, 2012 #6 Share Posted June 7, 2012 I do not believe any of the portholes have any significant obstructions. They are a very nice addition to the room and part of what makes S1's a lot nicer than S2's on the S-Class ships. Soot occurs on pretty much all the aft facing balconies of S-Class ships; the only ones that may be safe are the uppermost floor with balconies as they do have an overhang. For other aft facing rooms how often and how much soot you will receive will depend on how the wind is blowing. Some sailings you make be lucky and have little to none, other sailings there might be copious amounts on a frequent basis, most sailings are somewhere in between. While the soot is unpleasant, most people are able to deal with it; the stewards do try to hose them off when they can and you can minimize the impact by wearing flip-flops when out on the balcony and putting towels over the balcony furniture when sitting. terry55 Posted June 7, 2012 #7 Share Posted June 7, 2012 How much of the balcony is covered in either 8336 or 9374?

ClaudiaB Posted June 7, 2012 #9 Share Posted June 7, 2012 We've been in 1403, 1663, 1666 and never had any problem with soot. I guess there's always a chance, but we didn't have any. On occasion there will be a little piece of something from decks above, but nothing much. No obstructions on the window either. The window washing machine on 1403 isn't an issue either --- it is waaaay down in the corner and doesn't distract at all. It moves -- of course -- washing the windows, so it's not there at all quite often. The only thing it might obstruct is the view straight below into someone's deck. Corner aft S1 cabins are what we like best of all. Quiet, fabulous view in all directions, and a nice little walk from the rest of the ship. We prefer the Penthouse Deck suites - the best attendants and butlers are up there.
jenniebnyc Posted June 7, 2012 #10 Share Posted June 7, 2012 In 9374 we never had a problem with soot...only salt residue which is unavoidable. No overhang. Lots of sun. No obstruction whatsoever. It was truly a lovely cabin and would book it again in a heartbeat.
City_Woman Posted June 7, 2012 #11 Share Posted June 7, 2012 We did experience some soot. One day was worse than the others and we asked out butler if they could wash down the balcony. That was done. Judy
Jane2357 Posted October 26, 2012 #12 Share Posted October 26, 2012 We have booked 1663 on Eclipse for Feb. 8, 2014 - a 14 night Southern Carribean. Does anyone have experience with which side of the ship might be better in terms of sun and view while in ports? Thank you.
Pushkin Posted October 26, 2012 #13 Share Posted October 26, 2012 We have booked 1663 on Eclipse for Feb. 8, 2014 - a 14 night Southern Carribean. Does anyone have experience with which side of the ship might be better in terms of sun and view while in ports? Thank you. I was in this cabin last year (friends we were cruising with booked it). It was a really great cabin on port side (a lot of people prefer port side). In caribbean, sun and view would be good from both sides.
HopefulCruiser123 Posted October 28, 2012 #14 Share Posted October 28, 2012 Thats a really cool shot of the aft part of the ship. We are in an accessible sky suite AW2130. Would love to be able to see that room from the outside. Can you clue me into where you found that photo? Thanks.

Does anyone have experience with which side of the ship might be better in terms of sun and view while in ports? Thank you. Port vs. Starboard should not matter for that itinerary. The nice thing about the S1's is you have mainly an aft view (with a bit of a wrap-a-round to one side) - but you are able to see both sides since you are aft. Ships dock differently when in port due to a variety of reasons, so you can never predict whether port or starboard will have a better view on any given port (the same ship might dock facing a different direction one week versus the next at the same port). As for sun, unless you are travelling in a single direction (i.e. a transatlantic or a one way Alaskan cruise) there is generally a balance of sun on port versus starboard across the duration of the cruise.
