Is Costa Maya Safe?

Recommended Posts

A friend told me today that her family cruised to Costa Maya Aug 2004 and that she felt it was very unsafe and recommended that we not even get off of the ship there. She said there were soldiers with guns in various places in plain view.

Has anyone else had this experience? I had planned on taking an excursion to see the ruins - but I want to hear from others that have been there before I book it.

Thanks

My wife and I have been there four times and shall return again in August. The area is quite safe. Yes, there is a military presence in the town. They have a base as you enter the northern end of the village. One must remember that drugs coming from Central America can be dropped off boats on any coast. We have the same presence of military on our coast; just not as openly present with weapons. This would not be politically correct in our liberal society! The open show of military presence might offend someone or injure their psyche.

Anyway, back to your question; the port is safe, the town is safe. and the people are very friendly. Have a great time there and enjoy the absence of a large population and large urban sprawl. Majahual is presently a quaint little town that is a snapshot of life in the slow lane. Bon Voyage!

Has she been to an airport in the US lately? Or in Europe for the last 15 years? Not sure how the presence of guns equates to being unsafe. Be sure and look when you get off the ship in Cozumel. You'll see soldiers there, also.

Thank you for the replys! Point well taken. The comment about the airport made me laugh. You are both right...we are going to book the excursion and enjoy it.

We saw guns in Cozumel and in Belize, but you must remember, the world is changing as you read this. Chaos and rebellion are the order of the day. I'm not afraid of guns. I like guns and own several. It is the lunitics and mal-contents that you must worry about. Remember, the U.S.A. was once a radical and belligerant place. These are third world countries with little or no freedoms, very little money and ,in a lot of instances, very corrupt governments. Shoot, if I lived there I would probably carry a gun too.

Sorry, sometimes I get off on a tangent.

We were on Carnival's Imagination on July 4th 2 years ago and the ship was escorted out of Key West by several heavily armed US COAST GUARD boats. Needless to say this was a little unsettling but comforting as well. If anything were to happen we had plenty of fire power in those speedy little boats.
