Explorer 9 night - Clarification 2 or 3 formal nights

Recommended Posts

While I have read that some sailings have had 3 formal nights, our sailing (6/7/12) had just 2. I questioned someone at the customer service desk. He said that if many cruisers (especially those with lots of prior sailings) request 3 formal nights, they add an addtional night. They want to keep the "frequent cruisers" happy. Also, if their are mostly non smokers onboard, they add an additional night. I guessing this is because they can increase casino revenue if it is non smoking.

He said they decide very last minute if the sailing will have 2 or 3 formal nights, so I don't think you will know for sure until you board.

I can tell you we saw a wide range of attire on formal nights(as with every other ship we've been on). We saw everything from jeans and a pullover collared shirt to tuxedos for men and capris with a blouse to sequined gowns on the ladies.

On our May 24th cruise, the paper that they give you on the first day, which lists the highlights of each day of the cruise, stated that there would be 3 formal nights - Days 2, 4, and 8. However, the Compass on Day 4 stated "Smart Casual". When we questioned the Head Waiter beforehand, she confirmed that Day 4 was not formal and then after checking with her superiors, came back and said that it would be formal. Just about everyone had on casual outfits that night and ignored whatever the confusing information said.

So, really there were only the two formal nights.

For 10 day add 1/4 formal night. Wear a cummerbund and tie only, no coat or shirt. Most people are lazy and slobs in my opinion but I look like James Bond in a Tux so what do i care. All the ladies OOH and AH! BWAHAHA!

Evening news is where they begin with 'Good evening', and then proceed to tell you why it isn't.
