1: Does Freedom dock or is it tendered?

2: for a private tour (we arrive at 8am) is meeting our tour guide between 8:45 & 9am going to be enough time to miss the rush of passangers trying to get off?

It docks.

 

You should be fine meeting a private guide. They are used to cruise passengers and schedules, so they understand how long it should take you to meet them.

Thanks DonnaK! The tour guide asked what time we wanted to be picked up and I was hoping that would give us time to miss the crowd in a rush to get off the ship.

We just did this a few weeks ago. Freedom is docked and it is super easy and quick to get off. We scheduled to meet our guide at 8:15. I was a little worried about it but we were off and at the Taxi/bus station at 8:05. :)

We were at St Marteen many years ago and took a tour of the island. This time, we just want to get off and walk about. Is there any thing at the dock to see - stores?

You can walk to town. It's about a mile on a pedestrian walkway (no vehicles) and there are kiosks and shops along the way. Alternatively, you can take the water taxi for $6pp all day pass (recommended). There is a nice little beachfront where you can rent chairs/umbrella inexpensively, and behind that is the Main shopping district of Phillipsburg...all the shops you can ask for!
