Sailaway487 Posted June 19, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 19, 2012 Just noticed on Marine Traffic that Thomson Dream is docked and tendering from Sorrento today. Currently doing the Treasures of the Mediterranean itinerary. No mention of a change in itinerary on Thomson's website. Anyone know why it might be that it hasn't docked in Naples today? Port congestion maybe? I wonder if it is going to be a permanent change now for the rest of the season for Treasures of the Mediterranean and Roman Epic itineraries? I would guess that they would be able to operate the majority of excursions still, although getting to places like Herculaneum would take a lot longer. Judaism Posted June 20, 2012 #2 Share Posted June 20, 2012 It would certainly suit us if it docks in Sorrento throughout the summer, as we intend to take the hydrofoil there from Naples. Buying tickets for the hydrofoil at Naples is always a nightmare, and takes forever!! This, for us, would be ideal!!

Buying tickets for the hydrofoil at Naples is always a nightmare, and takes forever!! This, for us, would be ideal!! Would certainly take longer to travel to Pompeii and Herculaneum but Sorrento is lovely and I am sure it will still be possible to go to Capri on the hydrofoil from there and also take in some of the Amalfi coast. Sounds like a good move. Naples unnerved me and I didn't really feel safe there. Don't know if it was my imagination but I didn't get a good vibe there. biffybear Posted June 20, 2012 #4 Share Posted June 20, 2012 We were planning on staying onboard when we dock at Naples this time. We have visited a few times before and have seen Pompeii, Sorrento and Capri. Would definately go ashore again if we dock at Sorrento though, it was a lovely place for stroll around. Naples itself is a dump and not for the faint hearted. The young dealer in the casino horrified us with tales of what had happened to some of the staff while they were shopping for clothes. Does anyone know if there is a definate change in the itinarary?

' young dealer in the casino?' found this amusing as my mind boggled! stroll around sorrento if you haven't already had a heart attack climbing what can only be described as the North face of the Eiger! fair warning get the bus up to sorrento you will then not be sweaty or gasping for breath to enjoy this village. I actually found Naples an experience crossing the city and getting the train to Sorrento, taking our lives into our hands trying to cross the roads walking pas the shops where you can buy guns and knives it's really interesting and cannot believe there would be trouble unless you make it obvious your are a tourist, ie: England football shirts etc. was a little disappointed however when we found out we could have got the train from the Port....doh! had to apologise to whole family...however enjoyed the hussle and bussle. and the train journey, we have been over to Sorrento before on the little ferry not hydrofoil which was brilliant however only had about 2 hours in sorrento then. DebsLpool Posted June 20, 2012 #6 Share Posted June 20, 2012 I know what you mean about Naples, Littlenell. We took the train from the port station, to Pompeii, on our last cruise, which was no problem. After Pompeii we intended to jump the train to Sorrento, but we stayed in Pompeii longer than we intended, so decided to return to Naples and look about there. We got off the train at the same station, which may have been a mistake, and strolled about, yet another mistake. I have never seen anything like it, people sleeping on heaps of rubbish, which was everywhere, half starved dogs rummaging through the ruubbish, kids dressed in old clothes sitting in the streets. It was sad and scary and felt like we had wandered into an old film from the 1930's. I know there are more pleasant sites in the City, but by that time, we had experienced enough of what it had to offer, and decided to return to the ship When we returned to the port, without any mishap, I have to say, the bar we stopped off to have a drink before boarding, then tried to rip us off, probably thought we had more money than sense. It seemed to be a common occurence as another couple were getting into an arguement, when we left, after paying the correct amount. So Naples, never again, should we be on a ship that visits there in the future, we will not be spending any time there, probaly head straight to Sorrento, which is a delight. biffybear Posted June 20, 2012 #7 Share Posted June 20, 2012 Why did your mind boggle over the young dealer in the casino? He must have been about 22 or 23, thats young to me. As for Sorrento we went as part of an organised trip so we got there by bus! As for wearing an English football top I would rather poke my eye out with a pointed stick! Now had you said Scottish football top you might have had a point. With regards to Naples I suppose its all down to personal taste, not for me I'm afraid. We were actually warned by Thomson to be very careful of our personal belongings in Naples. Historically, the South of Italy has been much poorer than the North and consequently there is more crime and organised crime. I can think of many other tourist trappings that give us away such as language, dress, cameras etc. I am not singling Naples out here. The Costa del Sol is notorious for crimes against tourists. Wherever you get tourists you will get criminals. I absolutely love the Bay of Naples but not the city.
Billym1507 Posted June 21, 2012 #9 Share Posted June 21, 2012 I have a sour taste in my mouth regarding Naples. A lovely older couple were on our dinner table. The lady was in a wheel chair. They got off in Naples and he had his pockets emptied. Now every time I hear Naples the incident springs to mind. Billy.

Dark Defender Posted June 23, 2012 #11 Share Posted June 23, 2012 I was on the affected cruise. Best change ever! When we returned to the cabin after the entertainment we had a note with Cruise News saying that due to larger ships docking in Naples. At the time itinerary arranged weren't to know etc. I was happy as docked in Naples last year, and saw it as weakest port of last week. Bonus was Sorrento is a lovely place, one of my favourite ports from the fortnight! Tip is getting the lift from the port side up to the town - 1.80 euro return and takes a few seconds ( defo no more than a minute).

As Dark defender said, the change was due to congestion at Naples. I Have to join you in saying Sorrento was stunning, we went to Herculanium from there a fab trip to and spent a good time in Sorrento afterwards. A brillliant tender port to visit. Flopsy Posted June 24, 2012 #13 Share Posted June 24, 2012 Gosh I will be so pleased if on our cruise we go to Sorrento instead of Naples. I love Sorrento but Naples makes me nervous so I will stay on board if we dock there! Flopsy
DebsLpool Posted June 28, 2012 #14 Share Posted June 28, 2012 Flopsy Don't stay onboard, just don't linger in Naples. It would be a shame to miss the joys of Sorrento, Pompeii, Herculaneaum, all easily accesible by train from the Port of Naples. Or take the hydrofoil to Sorrento, if you are nervous about the train. If you don't want to be independent take one of the organised tours, it really is a beautiful part of Italy.

Dark Defender Posted June 28, 2012 #16 Share Posted June 28, 2012 Good news for you is Thomson still operate the tours to Pompeii etc. Well they did last week. The booklet noted that it was about 2 hour drive to these spots.

A shame really, as I think Sorrento would have been a better option, but I suppose the fact that it's a tender port and that they can make more money from excursions from Naples, I'm guessing that a permanent swap for next year is doubtful...
