Rarotonga

Recommended Posts

Are there beaches or things to do without taking an excursion?

Yes. We tendered ashore to a wharf about 15 minues walk from the town - Avarua - also the capital of the Cook Islands. There is a market on the way and local tour operators and taxis waiting for your custom. There are local buses that circle the island. You can also hire scooters to drive along this circuit. We did the markets, ate ashore, walked along the harbour front and did not get as far as the beach area - about 10 kms away - Muri? The currency is New Zealand Dollars. We had some NZ dollars left over from a cruise the previous year.

Grab the public bus in town and head to "Fruits of Rarotonga." Great snorkeling right off the beach. The bus goes in a circle around the island so no way to get lost. just let the driver know where you are going.
