GTY??? What is this???

Recommended Posts

I have seen people mention a GTY. I really do not know what this is, or what the benefits are to book this way. Can anyone help me with a quick explanation?

I have enjoyed this site very much since I joined this winter and thank you for all of your helpful hints!!!:)

GTY is a "Guarantee", instead of booking a specific cabin # you book a GTY in a certain category. The prices are generally a bit cheaper. NCL assigns you a cabin in that category or possibly a higher category.

Just be aware you could end up in an undesirable location, and at times you may not be assigned a cabin until cruise time.

Booking a GTY can be a good way to save some money if you are truly totally flexible about your cabin location. It should only be done if you are prepared to get exactly what you pay for.

DH and I did this once, for our very first cruise. It worked out well for us but now that we know a lot more about cruising and booking, we wouldn't do it again quite as readily.

We have done it twice on NCL with acceptable results. Both times we booked the lowest category of inside as a GTY. We were assigned cabins on much higher decks and forward.

I think this worked better before NCL started having sub categories of inside and balcony cabins.

I book a GTY in particular categories because it does not make a difference where I land meaning deck level, forward-mid-aft, as the price is usually lower for a GTY. Even so, I love a surprise and I love the mystery of wondering where I will end up. Usually, it ends up being "up" and I am happy. If not, then I got what I booked and I am still happy.

If I had issues walking, issues with motion, or needed to be near elevator or stairwell, or near a particular venue (restaurant, casino, theater, pool) then I would consider booking a specific room. I have not seen a suite guarantee as others above mentioned. For me, when booking a suite I want it to be a particular one.

Good luck and have fun with what you decide!

I booked GTY 3 times and all three times I was upgraded to a higher category....Just luck I am sure. I also hear that your latitudes level may play a role as well.

Like said by others, if where you stay on ship is not an issue this option may work out well for you:D

Good luck and have fun with what you decide!
