What to do with a rental car in Skagway?

I am thinking of renting a car in Skagway to take the scenic drice to Carcross and Emerald Lake. This should leave another 4 or 5 hours in Skagway, and I am interested in any suggestions for other outings.

 

Will we have time to drive to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Haines? How about the wildlife park?

 

Any other ideas?

Cancel the car rental in Skagway.

 

Instead, take the "Fast Ferry" from Skagway to Haines (about :30 ride) and rent a car in Haines.

 

This area is beautiful and you'll be able to drive through the Eagle preserve if you'd like.

 

Haines has a website (google it) and you can get all kinds of info there.

 

You'll love it.

 

Skagway, by the way, is a tourist trap. Don't even bother.

The one thing I would do in Skagway is take the guided walking tour through the National Park Service. It will give you an overview of the history of the town. It will be corny at times, but overall fun. The best part, it's FREE!! Go to the National Park website and you can look for Skagway and information about where to go to get a ticket for the tour.
