cruisue Posted September 4, 2012 #1 Share Posted September 4, 2012 Has anyone taken the Rome on Your Own excursion? The Carnival site says it leaves the port at 7:30 a.m. and it is a 10 hour tour. It takes about 90 min to get to Rome and the same to get back to port, so I'm assuming you have to be back to your bus at around 4 p.m. The ship doesn't sail till 9 p.m., so this seems early to have to get back to the bus. Any thoughts?
Sauer-kraut Posted September 4, 2012 #2 Share Posted September 4, 2012 You can do this cheaper by just taking the train into Rome for a few Euros. The train trip to Rome is about an hour from the port. You will find specifics on the ITALY board under PORTS OF CALL -- Europe. ;)
DEL67 Posted September 4, 2012 #3 Share Posted September 4, 2012 As the other response indicated, the train is a good option. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to get from the port into the Rome Termini station. Note: Depending where you are going first in Rome, you might choose to get off at one of the earlier stations. The BIRG ticket only costs about 12 Euros and includes the buses and Metro once in Rome. The station is about 10 ten minute walk. You can buy the ticket at the first store after you get off the port bus. Then walk, keeping the water on your right, for 5 or 6 blocks. The train station will be up a small slope across the street on your left. Be sure to validate your ticket in the machine at the station. Otherwise you could be liable for a fine. If the boat is not sailing until 9 PM, last call will be at 8:30. Therefore, given that trains can be late and you have to take a port bus, I would plan to leave Rome between 6 PM and 6:30 PM. Note: The down side of the train is that they are often crowded and many cars lack air conditioning.
Rare Essiesmom Posted September 5, 2012 #4 Share Posted September 5, 2012 The down side of the train is that the BIRG ticket is only for the lcoal trains, and I believe the last one that will make the trip is around 4:30p. Go to Rick Steves' website and download free audio tours and maps for lots of Rome attractions. Rome is very walkable. EM
