letseat lobster Posted September 13, 2012 #1 Share Posted September 13, 2012 We are looking into an inexpensive way to get to a useable beach at the Grand Cayman port. We have done all the western ports many times before and many times stay on the ship. But this time we will be with our 2 & 3 yr. old grandsons who love the beach. Any suggestions? We are also going to Montego Bay and Cozumel. We remember slightly that there were beaches at some ports right near the ship. Just can't remember what port:eek: Thanks for any and all help! We are also going to Montego Bay and Cozumel. We remember slightly that there were beaches at some ports right near the ship. Just can't remember what port:eek: Thanks for any and all help! was there last december. we had to tender on the other side of the island because the seas were very rough that day on the georgetown side. we took a taxi to georgetown for $5 each way. The beach area we tendered to was nice and quiet but I didn't notice any beach areas around georgetown. Very commercial. Could be something right outside of town but didn't go that far. Taxis are cheap. You could probably just have a driver recommend a beach and just tell him to be back at a certain time to pick you up at that location. caribsun Posted September 13, 2012 #3 Share Posted September 13, 2012 Take the kids to Public Beach on Seven Mile beach which is very close to Seagrape Beach club. At public there is a playground, water toys, picnic tables under cover, restrooms. City bus is $2.50, shuttle $5.00, may be less for the kids. cb at sea Posted September 13, 2012 #4 Share Posted September 13, 2012 The bus is a cheap, effective option.....the bus stop is right off the tender dock....
mn_isla_girl Posted September 13, 2012 #5 Share Posted September 13, 2012 We are looking into an inexpensive way to get to a useable beach at the Grand Cayman port. My daughter and I walked to Royal Palms on 7-mile beach. It was only about 2 miles, that's too far for little ones to walk though. A cab was only $4 per person. drew sailbum Posted September 14, 2012 #6 Share Posted September 14, 2012 I'll second the recommendation for the section of Seven Mile Beach known as Public Beach. It's the best beach place for small kids. You can taxi right from the tender pier (about US$5 per person, each way) or take a 2 block walk to the bus depot (US$2.50 per person, each way) which is located next to the library on Edward Street. There will be taxis waiting at Public Beach for the return trip or you can flag down one of the passing buses by waving. No need to pre-arrange your return transport to get back to the port. tracey980 Posted September 25, 2012 #8 Share Posted September 25, 2012 Public Beach sounds like a great place for us on our upcoming trip with out almost three year old. Are there restaurants there? Anyone have any pics? I was just googling seven mile beach but can't find the specific section known as public beach. Thanks!

Calico Jacks is a beach bar right next to SMB Public Beach. They serve typical bar food - burgers and such. There are often a couple food trucks in the parking lot at SMB Public Beach. Burgers, sandwiches, or even some local food such as jerk. An ice cream truck is often there as well.
Caymandiver1 Posted September 25, 2012 #10 Share Posted September 25, 2012 Smiths Cove is about 1.5 miles to the south of the terminal. There are restrooms and showers there but that's it. It's great snorkeling. Here's a video. http://idiveglobal.com/locations/smith-cove/
planotex Posted September 26, 2012 #11 Share Posted September 26, 2012 Is there a convenience store where I can buy beer and ice nearby?
drew sailbum Posted September 27, 2012 #12 Share Posted September 27, 2012 Is there a convenience store where I can buy beer and ice nearby? You'll need to stop at a liquor store for alcohol. Generally you cannot buy beer at gas station convenience stores. There are no liquor stores within walking distance of Smith Cove or SMB Public Beach. Calico Jacks bar is adjacent o SMB Public Beach and can serve you all the libations you might want. Fair warning... alcoholic beverages are EXPENSIVE in Cayman. The import duty rate just went up again which will probably bump up a bottle a bit more.
