Greenock to Glasgow

spacer.gifGreenock to Glasgow on a Sunday

Golden princess docks Greenock at 9 AM and leaves at 7 PM. Ship bus to town is $59. Seems high.

On a Sunday what is best way to/from Glasgow? Once there we will do the hop on/off bus and lunch and head back to the ship around 4.

Taxis are usually high but there could be 4 of us to share costs. Are there trains or public buses running on a Sunday? What are our options?

Just to give you an idea of ScotRail prices, I did a few sample Greenock to Glasgow runs in July 2005, and the prices range from 12 pounds to 17 pounds, return (round trip), roughly $24 to $34 per person.

I think you'll find that if you ask for a cheap day return.....(excludes travel in commuter peak times)...the price is £4.90 (approx $9)

If you ask for a standard day return (no time restrictions) the price is £6.90 (approx $13).

The higher prices your are getting from Scotrail is because you're not specifying a DAY return.

Hope this helps :)

Really nothing to do in Greenock! It's harbour is basically a parking lot for the huge oil rigs, However it was quite an important harbour during WW2. By that part of your trip you may find you need a down day, WE were exhausted! We walked the streets , admired the little gardens and stopped in at a locally run little museum( mostlly artifacts re. WW2). then we chilled out on board. Glasgow is just another busy city and after Dublin we just weren't up for it. Wait til you grt to Kirkwall in the Orkneys. It is amazing!!!! Save your energy.

  • 5 weeks later...

As an alternate to Greenock and Glasgow, try taking the Western Ferry across to Hunter's Quay and the villiage of Dunoon. This is a quaint Scottish coastal village. Ask for directions to Anselmo's Fish and Chips. You can hire a cab in Dunoon for a trip to Younger Gardens at the head of Holy Loch.
