our flight gets into MIA at 10:30 pm the night before our cruise sailing out of Port Everglades in FLL. where should we stay? best way to get to ship?

Personally, at that hour, I'd get a cheap airport hotel in MIA with shuttle and then go to FLL in the morning.

You will be able to find a hotel with shuttle from the airport. Lots of recs here. Then arrange transp in the morning with one of the shuttle vans services recomended here like SAS in the morning. MANY peopele do what you are doing, and it isn't that big of a deal if you are saving money by flying into MIA. If you scan the boards you will find TONS which ask what you are.

From MIA to port everglades you have options:

• Shuttle with QLS, Go Airport Shuttle or American shutle
  
• taxi for $85+
  
• Limo for about the same (but a nicer ride! ;)) -- check Larry's limos for Miami service
  
• You could rent a car MIA to FLL if you need to stop and shop on the way
