We were in San Juan Del Sur on our P canal cruise. IMO you dont really need to take a tour. We had a great time just wandering around the port. It is a neat little town.

It is also home to Stones and Waves- a wildlife sanctuary-that partners with a hotel called Pelican Eyes. You can visit and see the great work they are doing.

Daniel and Judith Russ jeeptourlaserena@gmail.com gave us an excellent tour of the Elqui Valley in comfortable 4WD vehicles each carrying up to four passengers. We enjoyed an excellent tour and delicious picnic lunch with them in March 2012.

Daniel and Judith are fluent English speakers, great company and good sources of information about the region and life in Chile. They will collect you at the port gates and return you there in good time for departure.

Manta, we didn't organise a guide, took the shuttle from the port to town and wandered around, watched tuna boats unloading the catch. There were some recent recommendations for guides in Manta on this board which made us wish we has organised one.
