What to expect on Christmas Eve/Day

We're sailing Viking Spirit during Christmas next year. It looks like we will be in Rouen for Christmas. Will there be anything to do besides walking around? Maybe a Christmas Eve service at Notre Dame in Rouen, special meal on board, do you think any shops will be open? TIA, Scott

There are 2 different but interesting churches in Rouen... The Rouen Cathedral (Notre Dame) and the Church of St. Joan of Arc.

There is lots of history in the cathedral - but we really liked the Church of St. Joan of Arc. Much newer - but beautiful in it's simplicity.

I am sure that one - or both - of these churches will have a Christmas eve service.

Scott - there might be some things open on Christmas eve, although most things will be closed on Christmas day.

The tourism office is easy to find - and it seems to be open on Christmas eve - so that might be a good place to start.

Just found this bit of info: The French celebrate Christmas on December 24th, so you might well find restaurants shut and many shops with very restricted hours. But in small towns and villages, you’ll always find the baker and the grocer open on Christmas Day morning, as well as the local bars. They will all close on Christmas Day afternoon however. Works for me, :)

Here is what I was told when on the cruise last month when I asked the question:

Regarding sailings during Christmas, various options are usually offered depending upon when/where ship is around Christmas. Once, mid-night mass at Notre Dame was offered, another time a palace decorated for Christmas was offered so sounds like nothing specific, but will vary by cruise/year. Once again, if you are aware of something based upon your pre-cruise investigation, it could possibly be arranged by the cruise staff if not offered, just ask.
