Because it says if you apply the funds from a Carnival gift card to your onboard account it will be non-refundable dollars. Not good if you don't spend everything while on board. Either wasted or burnt dollars.

Do they still offer Funship Dollars, or does the gift card replace those?

Q: What happens to the existing gift certificate dollars?

A: Effective November 2012, Funship Dollar, Scrip Dollar, and Cruise Dollar certificate programs will be discontinued. All gift certificates purchased prior to November 2012 will be honored and processed accordingly.

Currently, they are still available. Not sure what will happen in the future. I know that my older relatives still like buying the FSD for us because it's so easy and once they receive them, they can send them to us and it becomes a gift. Oh well... we'll see what happens in the future.

Thanks! So now I wonder if you can still call & purchase OBC to be applied directly to your booking, rather than buying a gift card(s).

The gift cards might be better then FSDs in the long run.

How much are they charging for shipping? I would most likely doing the e-card for myself. If I was to get some for friends and all, it would be nice to know if shipping costs anything.

If the cards are for you, why would you have them shipped to you? The e-cards dont incur a fee.

I would buy a funship dollar of 25. each pay. It was a fun way to my count down. I have over 700 saved doing it this way.

I dont think i would do that same with the gift card though.

another reason I do not like the card---

with the funship dollars i applied at the guest services-- whatever was left over I got a check for the refund.

that will not happen with the gift card.

wow.. if you order these a lot towards a vacation that 95 cents will rack up.

If you load the gift card on your S&S, like I plan on doing, go to casino and draw from your sail and sign, then cash out to players bank, and voila! You got your money back!

I would think that too. Once it is applied to your s&s you can cash it out :)

so... if I have a carnival gift card can I use it at a bar like the drink card I used on Hal, or will I have to take it to front desk to come off my account?? thanks Cathy

My understanding is they can be added to your s&s since you can only use your s&s card on the ship.

Yes, the slot machine method is great for getting cash from OBC and now for gift cards :)

Too bad they don't pay interest for having your money tied up, it works like a bank account.

LOL... As with ANY gift card, which are highly popular anymore. Might miss out on $.05 interest these days.

If anyone is interested, I did notice quite a bit covered on Carnival's FAQ's:

The OP posted a link that was specific to the cards

What else is new... some sites don't even list our province (PEI) when they do have Canadian sales available. C'est la vie...;)

Great idea though, I am sure it is just a matter of time when they are available north of the border.

First time I've seen another islander on here. You are so right. Very annoying. Don't they realize Anne likes to shop online? ;)

Currently, you can still buy FSD via the link above. If you want them to be applied to your onboard account, just put the booking number in place of everything that doesn't require an input (state, for example), and you should be good.

That has worked every time I've done it previously, and that's been 8 times so far.

Good luck!

That is exactly what I was thinking. HOWEVER, lets not panic just yet. Remember that on the back of the Funship Dollars Certificate it says the FSD's are "non-refundable" so people assumed that you put them towards your S&S account you wouldn't get a refund and as we all know that simply is not true at the end of every voyage if I had money left over I received a check. Even the "non refundable On Board Credit" was paid back to me at the end of the voyage. I think it's one of those wait and see, we need a brave soul to test this for us, but the Casino Method is a great Backup plan although the Casino isn't open on the last day.

I wish there was a way they could implement the following for those of us who build up OBC electronically before our cruise:

1) Purchase e-gift card.

2) Once you acquire your 16 digit card number goto Carnival dot com.

3) Apply e-gift card to S&S account via Carnival website.

4) Unused portion refunded at the end of the voyage via check or as a compromise, a Gift Card.

This avoids me carrying around a bunch of paper or plastic certificates/cards which could be lost and MOST importantly, saves me time from making a trip to guest services to apply them at beginning of the voyage or paying at the end of the voyage (if anyone has seen the lines at guest services, its bad and no one wants to be in line).

Just my $.02

Oh and one more thing.....Please....Please...Please, lets not let this thread devolve into someone coming on saying something similar to:

"You should hold your money to draw interest" or "Your giving Carnvial a free loan"

The fun ship dollar threads always had someone on there saying that....yea we know, we could've earned 5 cents on my $25 dollar gift card had I put it in an appropriate investment vehicle. I just don't have the time, i.e. juice is not worth the squeeze...................

I called the gift card section yesterday with a few questions and this is what I have been told.

1.Q. Can I use the card around the ship?

A. No you have to apply it to your sail and sign account.

2. Q. Ok, If I apply $500.00 in gift card OBC but only spend $400.00 will they issue me a credit or antother card?

A. Neither, any unused portion is NON Refundable.

3. Q. So I am better off just putting cash in as an OBC because they will refund the unused amount correct?

A. That is correct.

To me I really like the idea of the gift card, it would be nice to give as a gift to help pay down someone's cruise, but I see Carnival making ALOT of money on this too, because of all the loose few dollars not used.

I sure hope they come up with something a little clearer on the left over part. Oh and you can by up to 5 cards for the .95 cent shipping so 1 card and 5 cards at the same time is the same shipping cost.

See and this is one of those things where Carnival says one thing but what actually happens is another. The Fun Ship Dollars were treated the exact same way "NON Refundable" but you would always get a check back at the end of the sailing for any unused portion.

I know what they are saying now but I'm confident they would issue a refund check at the end of a sailing. They can't simply hold your money saying to bad... I understand trying to refund the actual card purchase to help avoid fraud and encourage customers to purchase cruises/excursions etc...)

Look at it this way from a purely simpleton approach (disclaimer: I'm no accountant):

Carnival corporation has numerous departments under its control, each with thier own budget. This includes a gift card department.

Customer pays gift card department, gets gift card.

Customer gives gift card to ship (a seperate department, lets call it ship department).

Ship department requests money from gift card department.

Ship department gets money from gift card department. Gift Card Department has now shifted money from its budget to another budget.

Customer spends down money from ship department but doesn't spend all of their money.

Ship Department has an overage in thier department.

Refunds appropriate amount back to customer.

Carnival Corporation loses no money, customer loses no money, everyone happy.

Again, just my $.02 and I'd be interested in seeing how this plays out because this seems to be the biggest concern regarding these gift cards right now.

You can get any or all the cash out of your onboard acount at any slot machine in the casino, easy peasy.
