Verizon on the Island

Has anyone used Verizon on the island? We are going to call and check in with the family. Our DD asked us to call daily. I know it is going to be expensive on the ship $2.50 a minute with verizon - but was hoping the island would be cheaper.

We use verizon, international plan and it cost $1.99 a minute
