Waihekean Posted January 20, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 20, 2013 There is a special event on Waiheke Island which is here only every other year "The Scenic Sculpture Walk". Walk from your ship (couple of minutes)to the Fullers ferry (destination Waiheke Island) and sail through the Gulf (35 or 45 minutes) past Devonport, Rangitoto and other islands. On arrival you would see a marquee about 50 meters from the terminal. There you can purchase light snacks, cold drinks, catalogues, merchandise and artisan produce at the start or finish of your walk. You also get complimentary sunscreen to do the "slip slap slop" and a shuttle bus ($5, every 15 minutes) to the start of the walk. The walk is free. The 2.5 km walk goes along the coast, past gardens and over private land with the most stunning views over the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland. Thirty large-scale site specific sculptures created by emerging and established artist are displayed in the landscape. This is one of New Zealand's premier outdoor sculpture exhibitions and not to be missed on a fine day! Just make sure you have some comfortable walking shoes and a sun hat and to make sure you know when the returning ferries are.

We had a day over there recently and two tips for those going over: Wheelchair users - your Carer is free Seniors for Australia - your Seniors Card is recognised and you will get a discount. Not sure about other countries, but ask, they can only say no! I am a wheelchair user and so with the senior cards for our friends the return fare was reduced from $140 to $85 approx.
