LolaBlue Posted February 13, 2013 #1 Share Posted February 13, 2013 Hi everyone, First time poster here, so sorry if this is a silly question. We are about to go on a cruise for the first time, going from Barcelona with NCL. My question is about additional tips - which currency should it be? (not whether you should/shouldn't tip!) We are coming from England, so will be getting Euros to use in Barcelona and other ports - but should we also get some US dollars for tips on the ship for Cabin Steward etc? Or do you think they would be ok with Euros? Thanks!
rvsullivan Posted February 13, 2013 #2 Share Posted February 13, 2013 Normally the ships currency is U.S. dollars. However, the crew would be happy with anything you give them. Euros will work and they would be very pleased to receive either!
calmac Posted February 13, 2013 #3 Share Posted February 13, 2013 The crew will be able to spend euros in many of the ports they visit. The crew's onboard shop trades in US$ so either will be accepted.
auducky2 Posted February 13, 2013 #4 Share Posted February 13, 2013 We tipped our steward extra since he had to deal with DD2's diapers every day. We used $$ and he was more than thankful. He even reminded us that his tip was included in what we pay, but we wanted to give him a little something extra. I don't think they really care what form it's in! :)
LolaBlue Posted February 13, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted February 13, 2013 Thanks for your replies. Just wanted to check that Euros wouldn't be wrong or cause more inconvenience than they'd be worth! I think we may stick with Euros then, save us having to get US dollars as well, then we would have 3 currencies (inc GBP) and I would be bound to muddle them up! lanceholt Posted February 13, 2013 #6 Share Posted February 13, 2013 We bring $1 bills to tip room service if we are in a regular cabin. If in a suite we usually tip with larger denomination US currency, but if we have Euros left over we use them sometimes. Our take is that they are equally happy with either. jdvmd Posted February 13, 2013 #7 Share Posted February 13, 2013 Either Euros or USD are fine. If in Europe, it saves the crew member from having to exchange the money.
mypleasure Posted February 14, 2013 #8 Share Posted February 14, 2013 Got off the Spirit in Barcelona yesterday. I tipped my extra over the DSC in Euro and they were all happily received by the crew.
