The information displayed includes speed, course, and ETA at the next port (assuming the crew have entered it into the transponder).

 

 

NB - this reporting system uses GPS satellites to determine the ship's location/speed, and VHF radio to transmit the information to ground-based receiving stations. As a result, ships are only tracked when they are within range of the ground receivers. (i.e., there's no information when a ship is on a trans-oceanic crossing, or sailing in a remote region not equipped with VHF receivers).
