Does anybody know if there are any required inoculations for a Panama Canal cruise please.

 

Going on Infinity in 6 weeks out of San Diego and back into Fort Lauderdale.

Going on Infinity in 6 weeks out of San Diego and back into Fort Lauderdale.

I've done the Panama Canal twice and was never asked to get any inoculations.

No, nothing required. Actually there are very few places in the world that REQUIRE any shots. That is not to say that there are a lot of parts of the world where it is smart to get a bunch of shots. Having traveled in rural Asia, Africa and South America I try to keep up to date on Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Polio, etc immunizations.

 

If a country has say a lot of Yellow Fever, THEY don't care if you have been inoculated, but the next country you visit may require it to keep you from importing it to their country.

 

All that said your chances of getting anything during a daylight transit of the PC is pretty low, and very few people bother to get any immunizations. Still smart to minimize exposure to mosquitoes.

You should check the CDC website. Also, the State Department's travel website, which features info for each country, will also have info on health issues in Panama.

We did the Panama Canal cruise a few years ago, and the travel nurse advised us to a

have the yellow fever jab. Although we didn't specifically need it for the cruise, as a travel nurse friend of mine said, you never know what will happen, and you could find yourself in a local hospital (we all hope not but you never know!), and that's when you will be glad you're covered! It also lasts for 10 years, just in case you go again.

Being up to date with tetanus is also advised anyway.
