Weather aboard QM2 in early May

I was fortunate to have sailed both Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth as a child. They made huge impressions on me and probably led to my career at sea. When QE2 came out, I along with many others, was a bit shocked by the complete break with tradition and the "terrible" lack of funnels. But once on board in May of '69 (like Jackson Browne I was 21) I was completely taken with the here and now. She was as new and fresh as the latest rock n roll hit and was totally unique. :D Quite the "A list" place to be at the time.

I am guessing that as a child we tend to have a memory that might romanticise certain issues but what were your thoughts regarding the interiors of the three ships? was the QE2 comparable to her older sisters, was she an improvement?

 

I see you were aboard the QE2 before she changed over from steam to diesel engines.

 

I am very much the traditionalist and wish that Cunard had kept the very distinctive funnels but I guess the livery is quite distinctive and hopefully this will not be 'dumped down'

I started this post and see that it's gone way off subject. I took a two-week cruise on the QE2 some thirty years ago. Cannot remember anything like the dress code today. The only picture I have is of me in a silk blouse (not overly dressy) and skirt. I do believe it has changed, whether for better I'll find out.

 

Still hoping to hear if sweater and a spring jacket during day is too much or not enough. Thanks.

Hi Anne. that is the point I was trying to make, QE2 was not the very formal ship it became when it first came out. Just as you remember. In the early days I was seated next to Sean Connery in the Casino and he was wearing a tweed jacket with elbow patches and a turtleneck shirt. No one told Mr. Bond he was under dressed.:eek: I think your sweater and spring jacket will look fine during the day. Have a great trip.:D
