bobby821 Posted April 3, 2013 #1 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Taking the GEM out of NY on 5/11 and found information on another site stating that Norwegian will allow you to bring aboard your own alcohol. Has anyone been able to do this without a problem? Thanks
WaldosPepper Posted April 3, 2013 #2 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Welcome to Cruise Critic! :) It's a darned shame you didn't find this site first, because whatever site you saw that information on is wrong. You can bring WINE onboard, and pay a corkage fee for each bottle you bring aboard. Corkage fee is $15 per bottle. You are not permitted to bring your own liquor. Now with that being said, get ready this thread to catch fire. In the meantime, you might want to spend lots of time hear reading the threads and getting answers to questions you didn't even know you had. This is a very friendly and helpful group, but the topic you chose for your first post is a hot one.
Richpontone Posted April 3, 2013 #3 Share Posted April 3, 2013 No beer or hard liquor allowed. You must pay a $15.00 corkage fee for each 750 mil. bottle of wine and $30.00 for each 1.5 liter bottle you bring on the ship. You should bring the wine in your carryon as it will be given the corkage label when you enter the ship. This allows you to drink in your cabin or outside it, in the restaurants, or bars on the ship. You can ask your cabin steward for wine glasses, or waiters at the restaurants or bars. Smuggling is not permitted although there are some posters who have done it sucessfully and some who have been caught. You can do a search on this message board for their individual experiences. Some passengers like to bring their own wine as they can not buy their particular brand on board the ship or if it is a very high priced bottle. luddite Posted April 3, 2013 #4 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Doing some research around here will save you some agita. A cruise isn't the same as visiting a beachfront motel.

camz Posted April 3, 2013 #6 Share Posted April 3, 2013 The real tease comes when you see the great prices they offer in the Duty Free Shops. Unfortunately, that doesn't help the situation as you do not get your purchases until the last nite of the cruise.
Richpontone Posted April 4, 2013 #7 Share Posted April 4, 2013 In St Thomas, US customs will allow you to bring back 5 liters of alcohol per person as long as 1 liter is bottled there. Gem was docked at Havencrest. There is a liquor store, Supreme Liquors, just one hundred feet from the pier. They sold liquor cheaper than the ship's store and more variety. Jim Beam was $13.95, ship store was 15.95. Teacher's whiskey $19.95, not sold on the ship. They also sold cold imported beer at $2.50 a bottle--a bargain on or off the ship. Hope that helps. There is another liquor store also close to the pier that charges higher prices, don't go there.

And having been there last week on the Gem, the security spot it in the xray machine and have you hand it over to the guy to return it to you on the last day And anyone from the UK, the allowance into the UK is 1 ltr per person so be careful

As for the beer, you will have to consume it while in port. No beer is allowed to be brought onto the ship. No smuggling allowed.
