We are considering the Crown Princess for 7/2/06. My daughter will turn 21 while on the cruise 7/5. Would she be able to gamble and drink after her birthday or would they still consider her only 20. She is kind of driving us nuts about this and i wasn't sure what the policy was regarding the age change. Any imput would be appreciated. thanks

I'm fairly certain that your age is frozen on the day you board...and that no matter whether you turn the magic 21 during the cruise, princess will not consider you an adult.

i don't know why, but suspect it's to prevent some over-zealous drinking.

but, of course, doublecheck. maybe i'm confusing this with celebrity.

On our mexico and Caribbean cruises if you were 18 you could have beer and wine, just not a mixed drink.

Very interesting as that has not been the case on any of our Princess cruises. I wonder if it was the ports involved or they have changed their rules?

This is straight from the Princess Website (today):

"No alcohol may be purchased or consumed by any Passengers under the age of 21. No Passenger under the age of 21 shall be permitted to engage in any gaming activities on board the ship."

I don't remember where I read it, but I too have seen/read that whatever age you are when you board, is the age that they consider you to be during the entire cruise.

I've never heard about being able to go to the pursers desk and getting a new card, but hopefully that will work!

Since your daughter is 21 years old, and you as her parents, buy her a few drinks, I'm sure you won't have any problems! You can always buy her a bottle of wine or champaign to celebrate her birthday in your room!

What a great way for her to celebrate her 21st birthday... not only is a cruise an awesome vacation... but I'm sure it is much safer than her friends taking her out to the bars to celebrate!!!

Have a wonderful cruise!

My SO and I, both 20 at the time, took a western caribbean cruise on Princess this past January. We were not allowed to drink. We could drink once we got off the ship and in the ports (Cozumel, Cayman Islands, etc) but were not allowed to drinkon the ship or be in the casino.

On Royal Caribbean you are allowed to drink beer and wine when you are 18 years old...but no mixed drink. You may be confusing the two cruise lines?

When I was in Sabatinis a few weeks ago, the waiter said that he wouldn't be able to serve me alcohol unless he could see some ID. He also mentioned, however, that if my dad bought wine and decided to give me a glass, then it would be up to him (basically hinting that it would be OK). So as far as drinks/wine is concerned you should be fine, especially since she will be 21. Not sure about the casino though...

I drank, gambled and was in the nightclub onboard Princess ships at the tender age of 17 (my first cruise). No questions asked, ever. It is common for bartenders to simply ask the passengers age and serve from then on in.

I think they're trying harder to enforce the age restrictions now. None of the bartenders on the diamond last year asked about my age, but I was asked several times this year (and some refused to even offer the choice of an alcoholic beverage, and we're just talking about a glass of wine here). Not sure about the casino since it doesn't interest me at all, but yeah, it seems they take the drinking age seriously.

The staff on board were checking ages frequently in the casino and at bars during our last cruise. It was a holiday sailing and we'd heard that there had been problems on the previous cruise, so perhaps they were just cracking down for that one sailing. From observation - if you are with your parents, the staff doesn't get too fussy if you look old enough to drink or gamble, but will be more likely to check your age if you are by yourself.

That's what must have confused me...that last RCL cruise.

You are right, it was RCCL. It was expensive for a few girls - some of those 18 year old girls were buying drinks for EVERYONE. As we were leaving one of the girls came over to tell our son her bill was over $500 for drinks for the FOUR day cruise. I thought he had been exagerating when he was telling us they were buying rounds for any guy close to their age. Can't imagine what she told her daddy when he saw that!!!!

I actually got carded at the cashiers cage in the casino last year (I was thrilled since I am 33!), and I ended up having to go to my room for my drivers license (since I would never normally carry that with me onboard). It was weird becasue I had a black Elite card, but she was standing firm and would not cash in my chips for me until I got the ID. Maybe if she could have her ID with her at all times after the big day??

Also, you will be able to take her out onshore, like someone mentioned above. I am sure the local bars would make a big deal about a 21st bday! Just keep her very close to you, after the poor girl in Aruba :-(
