We are cruising in January 2014 and have port side B6 cabins. I did port especially for the Napali coast cruise by. In 2006 we had aft cabins (LOVED) on the POH. Now that we are port side what will our views be like when we are pulling in and sitting in ports. We are traveling with my aunt & uncle who are in their 60's and they are Hawaii virgins and only 2nd time cruisers. I just want to make sure everything is perfect for them and they can see the islands as we are sailing and docking. Thanks :-)

In Honolulu you will be facing Sand Island rather than the dock/pier if your cabins are port side at Pier 2. For Sailaway, around the glittering base of mountains at dusk/evening on Oahu, you will be on the correct side.

In Maui and Hilo you will be facing the dock side...depending how high up your deck, there will be some city/surroundings viewable. Volcano cruise by on Tues eve will be on the Starboard side, but late so your parents might not be up at that time (9:30-10 p.m. or thereabouts). The viewing will be distant at any rate, best with binoculars or high zoom camera....and then, only IF the lava is flowing.

In Nawiliwili (Kaua'i), you will be facing the surrounding bay/countryside as the POA will be nestled up to the Pier on the Starboard side. As before, Port side will be first for the Na Pali sailby, the ship turns and returns a little farther off and at greater speed on the Starboard return loop back around northshore Kaua'i and then to Oahu.

All and all, it looks as if you have chosen well. Your folks, probably being early birds, can enjoy sailing into Maui's northshore port and Hilo while breakfasting on the Aloha Lanai if you wish. Stay calm, as they say in the Islands, it's sure to be a memorable cruise vacation they will cherish :)

Thank u so much. I do tend to worry because I'm always the one to plan the vacas and want everyone to be happy. It is their first time there and i want to make sure everything is perfect.

They are in their 60s and you think they will be in bed by 9.30? Are you having a laugh?

On my 60th birthday not only did I complete my first ever zipline experience, I also stayed up gambling in the Bellagio until 3 am.

Last year on our Norwegian Fjord cruise I never went to bed before midnight. Oops it is now 11.25pm, and I am still online...shame on me!

10 p.m. HST will be 4 a.m. EDT I do believe...with such a port intensive cruise, if one books lots of activities, even a younger person might be in bed, or starting this process around this time.

Lots of POA reviews from folks of all ages from the East coast, "no we missed most/all of the later shows and music, just too tired and needed to be up at 6 to make our 7/8 a.m. tender or tour." Of course others were up, carousing the night away with no worries.

That is also what happened to us in Alaska last year, with only 1 time zone difference, and ages in mid 50s to early 60s. Of course, YMMV

Just FYI....I llive near Hilo and see the POA in port every Tuesday. The ship varies which way it docks and which side is facing the pier. I asked about this on one of our POA cruises and was told that it depends on which side of the ship they would be doing maintenance on, etc. So, nothing is a given. But, remember, you will be in Hawaii and it is almost always fine weather to be out on deck to take in the sights from the opposite side of the ship!

Looking at the live web cams today I was mainly checking the weather, (drizzing, cloudy or downpour), in Hilo and noticed the ship did a 180 at some point in the early afternoon...first bow in, then aft in :p

Thanks for this information...kokua always appreciated!

A few weeks ago on our cruise, POA sailed by on the port side.We had port side cabins and we still went to the top to watch from the outside of the port side because it was just so exciting to actually sail by this site.
