London to Normandy on the way to Paris

Looking for an efficient way to spend a few days in the Normandy area on the way to Paris from London. Here's what I am thinking and if you have a better way, please let me know!

 

Eurostar London to Calais

Rent a car

Stay in a central location for day trips

Need to figure out the best town to drop of the car and take a train to Paris

 

Can this trip be done without renting a car and just doing it mostly by train. I understand it is better to take the Eurostar all the way to Paris in that case and transfer to a regional for the trip out to Caen.

 

Thoughts on which way is better? Other options?
