Marseile - what to do?

We are off Ruby Princess on Friday, May 9, 9A to 7P, and are wondering it there are interesting local sites for diy travelers?

I notice most of the posts have to do with getting to Aix or Nice or Eze, and we did these things a few years ago with a few couples on a private tour. This time we planned on just sight-seeing on our own and possibly going back to the ship early since we will have a port nearly every day for the next 15 days.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated and considered!!

Recall recently reading about a brand spanking new museum opening

There's a HOHO bus that can take you to Notre Dame de la Garde Cathedral on the hill. Vieux Port is lovely on a warm day.

Several people have written some nice things to do in port not to long ago..if you do a search you should be able to find them. Also, do a Google search as it will give you a wealth of info.

Our ship docked in the commercial harbour in Marseille, RCCL were charging $5 per person for a bus transfer , we opted to go by taxi as there was four of us for 20 euros. Lovely harbour on arrival. We opted to take the touristtrain 'le petit train' http://www.petit-train-marseille.com/ , we took the circuit 1 which takes you to the Notre Dame de la Garde, the views of Marseille are fantastic and all of the circuit tour was very enjoyable . It cost 8 euros each

These are a new addition to Marseille. The reviews seem good and the tours are apparently in French and English ... I just hope they are less smoky and smelly than the tuk tuks you find in India - Marseille already has enough of a problem with exhaust fumes.

There are two routes for the petit train, one through the Old Town and one up to Notre Dame de la Garde on the top of the hill.

Both leave from the Old Port and both have just one stop for about half an hour on their respective routes -- it's not a HOHO service. The Old Town one stops at the Vieille Charite and Notre Dame stops at - guess where? - Notre Dame. In both cases you can get off and catch a later train to return to the Old Port.

More details in this full guide to how to get around Marseille. http://www.marseille-provence.info/m...marseille.html edit.gif
