dopeyfanatic Posted June 26, 2013 #26 Share Posted June 26, 2013 If he really doesn't want to dress just tell him he can eat in the buffet that night... That's a little bit rude. It was said he only doesn't want to wear a suit/tux. He CAN wear, and appears to be fine with, pants and a dress shirt/tie.

Not as much so as our DD's comment when we told her about this thread this afternoon. "You'd have told us to dress up or stay home" Never had that discussion... Maybe because of watching all those Love Boat reruns...
Antonintassie Posted June 26, 2013 #28 Share Posted June 26, 2013 Hi Yes I know Australians supposively dont dress up ( but we generally do adapt well to our surroundings and wear what is required) If you pick a nice well cut suit in a darker colour most teens will get wear out of it weddings funerals dinners etc We travel as a family to the UAE and London and a suit with or without tie is normal after 5 for myself and my teenage son
Owlhelm Posted June 26, 2013 Author #29 Share Posted June 26, 2013 Blimey! I was expecting just a couple of "yes, he'll be fine in shirt & tie", or "no, he won't get in without a jacket" etc. Well, we're off tomorrow morning (up at 3:00am ), and I'd like to thank everyone for their advice. Dress shirts and ties for son have been packed, so if they turf him out on formal nights, it's his own lookout! Thanks again all, and happy sailings! :D Martin

SeagoingMom Posted June 26, 2013 #31 Share Posted June 26, 2013 That would be because a tie is assumed to be worn with a tux/suit  Ahhh, assumed... but not stated in the dress code. I have, as you have, of course, seen men in suits (also trousers and jacket, though maybe not tuxes) with no tie. But when OP asked whether "a smart pair of trousers, suit and tie" were acceptable, I was simply dealing with the concept of the tie. Many young men (I have five of them) do not rebel against a jacket, but HATE ties with a passion!

SeagoingMom Posted June 27, 2013 #33 Share Posted June 27, 2013 Not only young men, what is the point of them? Don't ask me -- I'm not defending them  But the custom does tend to rrender a man looking spiffy in the eyes of his female admirers. Just socialization, I suppose... If we lived in Scotland (which, perhaps you do...) we females would think our men looked spiffy in skirts... er, kilts! It's all learned behavior. My 21-year-old son who dislikes ties wants to sport a Nehru jacket, but they are hard to find. If he could, he'd resurrect that style!
