FLL to South Beach, South Beach to Port Everglades

Sorry, messed up the thread title earlier....

 

Leaving tonight for our cruise and will be flying into FLL. We're planning on staying in South Beach and then driving back on day of embarkation on Saturday.

 

We're renting a car for two one-way trips. I've tried searching on the boards here, but I'm a bit confused.

 

Is it possible to drive from FLL to South Beach without use of the tollroads? And then back from South Beach to Port Everglades? The rental agency is giving me the option of buying the electronic pass. If we don't take the tollroad, is the trip significantly longer? The only one we really care about in terms of time would be on Saturday morning when we would leave Miami at probably 9 am.
