Villafranche-Is a private tour necessary?

Recommended Posts

Jeff,

thanks for all of the good info. We will be in Villefranch Sur Mer in early Nov. We plan to follow your directions and walk! Wish there was a really easy to follow map - not just for directions but to save and savor after the fact. I've found a few Web sites with maps but none as detailed as I'd like. Any ideas of one available for purchase??

Found it!

My favurite map the Nice map covers the whole area you're looking at(sent mail order) is at:

http://www.city-map-guide.com/

They'll send one to you in the US.

I'd also print off:

I didn't answer your last question. You could add Eze in the day - but I can't picture it fitting neatly. Would you go in the morning and miss the Sloop for lunch!? No! Go in the afternoon? Well you might not want to after lunch and the Sloop!

You decide!

Jeff,

Thanks a bunch for the additional info. Note: I didn't ask about Nice...I'm happy to stay put in Villefranche with the walking info you've suggested. This is such a port intensive cruise that having one day without running around and trying to see everything sounds delicious (especially with the Sloop on the agenda :))

For research, I've been fascinated by this web site: http://www.multimap.com

You can zoom into almost any city and see the streets, then print what you want.

Susan, the walk around the Cap is blissful. David Niven's old house and my best friends at the Sloop for lunch.

Glad I could steer you away from the track.

Jeff

Looking forward to it!

(Just a note that the last few posts regarding maps were from Spengle.)

My hubby and I just came back from our honeymoon last Sept 2004 and Villefranche was trully an amzing port. One of the reasons i particularly liked it was apart from the fact that it is beautilful etc, the driving time to get to some of the main places was relatively short.

I would definately say that Eze and particularly St Paul de Vence was SPECTACULAR...we also went to Monaco/Monte carlo( only had 1 hour there), interesting but not spectacular by any means...for us now its "been there done that". But would go to Eze and St Paul again and again....not only is the view amazing but the villages themselves are pretty much something out of a story book...quaint medieval town with alot of history etc....

If you are going to any of these places i would strongly recommend taking a private tour...not only do they save you time but they know exactly where to take you...its not like you have days in this port and there is sooooooo much to see. we didnt go to Cannes because we didnt have the time. If you want to see Eze, St Paul, Nice and Monte Carlo you cannot also do Villefranche and Cannes in 1 day, so you must pick.

The drive to Cannes is about 90 mins approx, so if you want to include you would have to skip something.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but I have been to one of the other places that you recommended and many other locations and villages in the area, and even though I am apparently one of the uneducated Americans, I STILL choose St. Paul de Vence as my favorite out of all the many options in that area. :) It is just stunning, and I don't know of anyone that doesn't like it. There are good reasons why some of these places are so popular with Americans and are highly recommended.

Happy travels to all,

Donna

hold on ................... lets not start that up again.

I haven't said or implied or suggested that anyone was uneducated.

As someone who knows the area intimately and not just for one day on a cruise, I provided some alternatives to try and help - thats' all.

Your view, and everyone else who shares you view about the well trodden paths have been very well aired. I just tried to offer as a very single voice an alternative. I didn't even say my idea was better or anyone with a different view was uneducated ................

No, "uneducated" was my word, not yours, and it's no problem. I've also stayed in the area other than during a port call and just wanted to point out that I have visited a lot of places in this area and still like the ones that Americans recommend to each other. Like I said, there are good reasons why these places are so popular. I wouldn't spend a day in Monte Carlo either. I spent a few hours there (did the Frommers walking tour, the castle, enjoyed the views, and did a short stop at the casino). I don't even know what you mean about not starting that again because I don't recall communicating with you via posts, so whatever.

:)

Hi, Would like to know if it is possible to take a bus from Villefranche to Eze or if you can just take the train? What is the best way to get there? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Donna

we walked thru ville franc and took a train (empty) to Nice. wandered around town for an hour and a half and took train back to ville franc (packed with locals). we had lunch reservations at Cheve d'Or up at Eze. we took a local bus up there 6 euros each. Lunch at the resort was pricey!!! it was 660 euros for the six of us. before you pass out lunch was 60 euros each the rest was wine and champagne. the glass they offer your when you walk in is not complimentary. the 660 included tax and tip.

it was one of the finest meals i have ever had and i travel in the film business on an expense account. the view was from the italian border all the way to Cannes. Unbelievable!!! we then walked around Eze before heading down to ville franc and back to the ship.

If you were doing this again - the only thing I'd suggest is whereas the train is close to the ship in Villefranche there are two issues. The stairs getting up to the station might be tough for some, and the station in Nice is a dog of a distance to the places that most people wish to see. I'd always walk up to the top of the town and get the bus. The walk is nice and the bus stops off at various stops in the center of the action in Nice.
