PeterTellus Posted July 21, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 21, 2013 Anyone visit Turnagain Arm recently? I have read about the recent whale populations at other locations and was curious if there is much actitivity in the Arm lately. I will be there this week (7/25/13). huskyguy Posted July 21, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 21, 2013 Beluga whale sightings in Turnagain Arm are a rare occurrence. Making the drive several times a summer, my last sighting was probably about 20 years ago (and yes, I do still look just in case). Part of the issue is that whitecaps and beluga whale backs are impossible to tell apart at any distance.
Glaciers Posted July 21, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 21, 2013 I haven’t seen them in the arm for a couple years now. They are like most other wildlife and have patterns of feeding. The chances to see them increase during the hooligan run around May and also during the coho run in August/September in Turnagain Arm.
firstalaskatrip Posted July 21, 2013 #4 Share Posted July 21, 2013 No clue about current sightings, but we saw some last august from the train. Judging from the comments below, I guess we really lucked out! And yes, they did look a lot like whitecaps, just traveled in a bit different pattern so it was clear that they were whales. emeltee Posted July 22, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 22, 2013 We were there the first week of July. We didn't have any luck in spotting whales.
