Ncl breakaway - check in wine

I would encourage you to carry it on. After you go thru security, you will go to a table where they will put stickers on it. Once you take the bottle to a public area, ie restaurant, bar, etc you are then charged the corkage fee

 

So you're saying I can carry the wine on, get the sticker, and drink the wine in my stateroom without paying the cork? :confused:

What?!! I thought the corkage was charged on the spot as you boarded! Is this a change in the procedure? If they are depending on folks to bring out the bottle to be charged once they are onboard, they will not see many.

That is not how it works at all. You are charged when you bring them on board. Not sure what happened with Cusegirl's experience. I think she got lucky and got away with a freebie somehow.

 

You are probably right, but it is interesting that a comment was made on a new BA review here today by Shorty571, "Wine check in was pretty much non existent". He did not elaborate, but someone asked him what he meant. No response yet. But, it makes me wonder:)

The sticks are not free. They cost $15. Then you can drink it anywhere you want.

Easy...sometimes they do not man the wine check station.

This worked the same for me on the Jewel and the Gem. Somewhere else on this board it worked the same for someone else. Another thing is security just sends you to the table, they never tell them how many bottles you have, so you can just say you have one bottle as long as they are not packed together.

Yes, i realized it after i brought our first bottle to dinner. After that, we poured our wine in those thermal cups with straws and we were not charged for our other bottles.

 

Why not just bring a GLASS of wine to dinner? People do it from their rooms. From the casino. From the bars.

I have carried on many bottles without ever being detected in security or paying a corkage fee. I've also bought liquor in port and carried on without being caught. I'd say take it as a carry on, act normal, don't say anything and you may get away with not paying a dime.

ALWAYS, even NY, we brought wine on, went to the table for corkage fee. Sometimes they put a sticky on, sometimes just gave us a receipt. ALWAYS had to pay. Would show up on our bill.

 

Anything can happen but count on paying the corkage fee :)

From what I saw even if someone was at the table you could easily walk past it and board. It's out of the way and security cares more about finding bombs than worrying about what you do with your wine. I thought telling them I had alcohol would have been a bigger deal. Bring a case if you want. Even better carry on a bottle of vodka when you put it in the scanner ask the person scanning it where you should bring your wine. They'll then say right over to that table. Lol. I shouldn't be laughing but I'd expect it to be ran a lot tighter than that. They seem to rely on the honest policy. Good luck with that.

Why should anyone expect honesty out of their fellow man.

 

The OP was asking about bringing wine on and not paying corkage until they decided to consume it in public and that has been answered. Why must this turn into a smuggling thread, which by the way is against NCL policy. There goes that honesty thing again.

Yea, they got their answer. You MIGHT have to pay and it depends on wether or not everyone is doing their job. I would hope so because after all its a security check point. I would say the system is flawed from what I experienced last weekend.

You will be charged when the stickers are put on your bottles. You will also sign a receipt indicating how many bottles the corkage is being paid for. In addition, when you take the bottle to dinner, bar, specialty restaurant etc., your account will be checked to make sure the fee was paid. The charge doesn't post on your account immediately but usually on Day 4 or 5 and it appears as a charge from one of the main dining rooms.

Thanks, just one more question. I am checking in 12 bottles of wine. Will bring them on board in a collapsible, wheeled cooler(great hint from another cruiser). After the wine table, do I need to keep the wine with me until my room is ready or can I store it some place. Sorry, on more question. If we take a red and white bottle to Le Bistro, only drink half, can I bring the bottles back to the room. So excited to leave on the 25th!!!!

It isn't impossible to leave the bottles in the cabin even if it isn't declared ready. All you can do is ask the steward. Worst they do is say no.

There is a place that will check carry-ons in a holding pen prior to cabins being announced as ready.

 

Unfinished bottles can be stored by the sommolier or you can tote them to the cabin.

 

Your waiter gets a credit from the sticker. If you drink the bottle in the room it is a nice gesture to let a waiter have the sticker.

If you have them in a wheeled cooler you can:

 

a) wheel them with you. We always have a roll aboard, usually with some wine, computer, etc. We wheel it to lunch. After lunch we take it to our room.

 

b) You can wheel it to your cabin - maybe - depending on the time, and if you dare open those closed doors.

 

c) You can leave it in a room they usually have when you board and they hold it until rooms are ready, then you come back
