NOLA Hampton downtown - riverview?

Anybody know whether there might be a view of the Mississippi River from an upper floor of the Hampton Inn-downtown (Carondolet St) New Orleans?

Seems like it might be nice to have a view of the river from our hotel, but most of the riverfront hotels look pretty far from things on a map. Mulling over the best lodging location for us since we'll have only a day or two in NOLA. Seems like this Hampton location is close enough to go check out Bourbon St (not going to spend time partying/drinking there, just go see the Qtr.) without being right in the noisy part of French Qtr. Also looks convenient to the streetcar so we could see the garden district. By the way, is there a streetcar to Jackson Sq. or would this hotel be close enough for us to walk there? Need a place with non-smoking and no pets due to allergy/asthma concerns. Have seen that Drury Inn is rated well but they allow pets :(

We won't have a car, planning on taxi from airport to hotel and then taxi to our cruise ship, with streetcar and walking as our methods of transportation while in NOLA. So, I'm interested in finding a hotel that has the four attributes which I've typed in blue above. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated!

The Hampton is just across Convention Center Boulevard from the river but the convention center blocks your view. From a top floor room facing the river you may be able to see the tops of ships, but that's about it.

Its a fairly easy walk to the quarter and Jackson Square, or you can catch the riverfront streetcar at Julia Street.

The St. Charles Avenue is about eight blocks away. That's the one that goes to the Garden District.

Thanks for the reply jgmpuma. Not knowing the area makes it tough for us to figure out where to stay so every detail helps.

In order to see the things I mentioned, it sounds like we need to choose to either stay at a riverfront hotel and then make our way to the Qtr and the St Charles streetcar (to get to garden dist) OR stay near the Qtr and SC streetcar line but miss the riverview. Do you know if there is anyplace we could just walk in to see a nice view of the river (one day or evening) if we aren't staying near there? Also wondering whether the streetcar lines connect with each other. From the streetcar maps it looks as though we could take the riverfront streetcar to where we get on the SC streetcar or vice versa and eliminate excessive walking, though some on cruise critic have mentioned that some areas of streetcar lines are closed for repairs.

Some have indicated that the Riverwalk is good to see but may be closed for remodeling(?) -- is that a scenic area or just a shopping mall?

Sorry for so many questions. I so much appreciate the advice of people who have been there. Thanks much!

Riverwalk is closed, so no help there, but here is a walkway along the river from the foot of Canal Street to the end of the French Quarter, so plenty of places to watch the river. You can take a ride across the river on the Canal Street ferry (free) and get a great view of the city.

The only hotels I can think of with river views are certain rooms in the Hilton Riverside, the Wyndham on Decatur Street and the Marriott and Sheraton on Canal Street. It just depends on what is available. Hit or miss.

The Hampton isn't a bad place to stay. The rooms are larger and less expensive than the ones downtown. Most areas are walking distance, or you can catch the Riverfront streetcar. It does not connect directly with the Canal Streetcar. You have to get off and board another one, but it is very close. Just ask for a transfer.

To catch the St. Charles streetcar, go down Canal to Carondelet, about six blocks from the river. Carondelet changes to Bourbon Street when it crosses Canal, so what you will see is the Bourbon Street sign.

The streetcar comes into town on Carondelet and stops at Canal. Instead of getting on there, walk up Carondelet to the next stop. The streetcar will be pretty full, but most of the people will get off at Canal and you will have your choice of seats.
