existentialtraveler Posted October 10, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 10, 2013 Is it walkable from the cruise terminal? How steep is the hill?
CaribbeanBound Posted October 10, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 10, 2013 I recall a Fort Georges near the terminal... Fort George is very close to the ship. We exited the pier terminal and turned right. There is a stairwell to the right of a tunnel. Just keep climbing until you get to the top. It's about a 15 minute walk up stone stairs and ramps. This might have been an awesome fort at one time. It has fallen into disrepair and is being used for multiple other purposes. Really too bad. However Fort George will give you lots of photo opportunities from its elevated point. Recommended!

Fort Frederick is further up the hill than Fort George and actually looks down on Fort George. Fort George was bombed by the US in 1983.
IslandStar Posted October 17, 2013 #4 Share Posted October 17, 2013 I did some research. Fort Frederick is further up the hill than Fort George and actually looks down on Fort George. Fort George was bombed by the US in 1983. A couple of gentle corrections :) to your research. Fort George is in the town of St George's. Forts Frederick and Matthew are slightly to the East and overlook the town, the Carenage and Fort George. Fort Matthew was supposed to have housed the revolutionary party and is the fort that was bombed by the US in the Intervention in 83. Unfortunately the information they had was incorrect as it actually was home to many mental patients at the time. If you're looking for breathtaking views of Grenada, including lush vegetation and magnificent scenic cityscapes and landscapes, Fort Frederick is the place to be. You can relax at Ft. Matthew's mini bar that recently re-opened. It is located on the lower level of the fort. Getting there: *By Taxi: ~25EC (~10USD). *Fees: Entrance fees vary depending on time of year and who you go with. During off peak seasons in small numbers, they expect more of a donation. During peak season in large numbers, they will more than likely charge you per person fees (~less than 5EC a person).
