Justifying the Cheers! program

I just read your post. I didn't read responses though. Shame on me.

Whatever you do, please do it with some consideration for your fellow cruisers and their families. Show some restraint and try not to get "hammered" when it's still family time in the public areas. Have a good time, but don't be "that guy" whose making an @ss of himself in the hot tub or dropping the F-bomb every 30 seconds.

If you are drinking 15 drinks a day, it's likely you may have a drinking problem...or more accurately, a stopping problem.

If your plan for vacation is to be hammered, why go on a cruise? Rough seas and you'll be seeing your "investment" again, coming out the way it came in.

Also, if your plan is to be hammered why spend the extra cash for being on a cruise in the first place? Just get a nice hotel on the beach in Mexico and imbibe till you can't see straight? It's not like your going to remember anything anyway.

Stay thirsty amigo....

artmanr-I don't know where you got that original poster was going to get and stayed hammered! It does not say that anywhere in the post. He is debating about getting the Cheers program to which he decided not to do. A lot if us are debating this issue so the is a helpful topic. Why so hostile?

Also, to say that someone may have a drinking problem? What gives you that right. Maybe you should take a hard look at yourself and what your motives are to be so hostile about this subject.

No offense to you OP. I generalized...saying Please.....and Whatever you do...

And yes, I have been there when over served adults behave badly. I don't judge you if you drink 15 drinks in one day. That's your choice. But, you "may" have a drinking problem. It's not an opinion. Go ask your doctor what he/she thinks.

On the last cruise a very over served 60s ish male was seen rudely throwing empty "bottles" of beer from the hot tub at a deck steward. He was also trying to give hugs to kids in the hot tub that were not his family. He opened beers by prying the tops off on the glass wall that surrounds the hot tub. This was at about 11 am.

I'm all for having fun. Just stay in control. Don't do anything inappropriate. It's a family cruiseline. And if I get flamed for having that opinion, so be it.

"Being hammered" is a subjective measure. If a woman who weighs 150 pounds has 12 drinks over a 10 hour period....her BAC is 0.19. Where I live .08 is the legal limit.

12 beers, 10 hours....180 pound man....0.11.

I'm not judging, just saying drink responsibly.

I think it is just hilarious how so many people seem to think that you must have 15 drinks a day if you have the Cheers program. The breakeven point is less than half of that number. Six or seven drinks in a 24-hour period is not going to get the average sized adult drunk, unless you slam them all down one after the other. And, why would you do that?

Ok, can someone just clarify a few things for me since they are a bit hazy, thanks in advance.

1) 15 drink limit is for alcoholic beverages, but you can still have unlimited soda beverages?

2) there is a 5 minute waiting period between alcoholic beverages?

3) Going out of Texas, you can not purchase the program until the first sea day, meaning your cheers program is valid for only 6 days?

4) If I get all 15 drinks in the casino, I can technically receive 15 $5 bet coupons?

Thanks!

The 15% is added to the entire amount of Cheers when you purchase it.

From then on, each time you order a drink, you get a "receipt" for the purchase price, with a "promotional discount" of 100% applied for a net cost of $0.00 and the "15% gratuity" line is also at $0.00 for a total cost of $0.00.

They do leave the blank line so you add an extra tip if you want to.

If the receipt was for one of the "Classic Cocktails" you can take it to the casino cashier and get a $5 match play coupon to use at a table game.

Table game, like craps?

Yes, the limit is 15 alcoholic drinks. Soda is unlimited.

Yes, and the Point of sale computer system enforces it.

Don't know anything about Texas sorry.

Its not where you buy them, but what kind you buy. To get the casino credit, you have to buy "Classic Cocktails", Mai Tais, Margaritas, and a couple of others priced at $8.95. But you get credit for each drink, no matter where you bought them on the ship.

Just when I thought you couldn't post anything worse, you proved me wrong. Do you ever actually read your replies before you hit the send button. Your remarks are an embarassment. I am totally new here and I have as many posts as you. I will continue to post questions and let the veterans do the replying. I suggest you do the same. Geez!

You're not wrong, of course. But you can't fight people like this - the pushback just encourages them. The best thing you can do is  and ignore. :)

"Family Time?" "Family Cruiseline?" as opposed to, what?

This is Carnival, with the FUN ships....

Go on Princess or HAL if you want a more "sedate" atmosphere.

Why don't you just book the whole ship so you can have all the "Family Time" you want, without those other pesky adult passengers who do indulge and come onboard for a good time?

I am not saying adults need to become absolutely smashed, in order to have a good time.

Have seen adults who weren't smashed, making asses of themselves and dropping F-bombs, as well.

I am getting Cheers on my upcoming cruise- a $300 bar bill for 6 days sounds reasonable enough for me.

That is how I am thinking about it. Not how I must have 15 drinks a day, because I paid for them.

I have never "lost my investment" on a cruise.

I find your proselytizing absolutely repugnant.

We're getting it on our next cruise, but I'm debating about buying it the first day. We're eating in the steakhouse the first night, so we get a bottle of wine. I won't drink much before dinner, and probably will be too full afterwards for more than one drink, so I doubt that I would make the minimum five drinks the first day to break even. My fiance probably can do it, however, so I'm not certain. I do want to get it so I can try a lot of drinks I wouldn't otherwise. This way, if I don't like it, I'll hand it back and five minutes later order something else. :)

So if you wait and buy it on the second day you only have to pay for 6 days on a 7 day cruise?? Just wondering?

My sister & I are 1st time Carnival cruisers and she's a drinker & I'm not (I'm the "DD" (Designated Diver") she was very disappointed to learn that the CHEERS package must be purchased by all cabin guests...that's ridiculous! (They track the consumption and would know if they were being shared!) We're looking forward to a fun winter getaway...just glad I won't have a bar tab at the end of the cruise!!!

I understand but all cruise lines do. NCL makes all over 21 buy the package and all under buy the soda package too.

Thank you for the info. Did you have to stow the beers in a bag or could you walk out of the bar with an armful of closed beers? Or did you have to take a stroll and visit various bars.

We'll be at HMC next summer. And sounds like an interesting idea. We'll have access to a fridge at HMC.

Thanks again.

We just carried them all back to the room and placed them in a collapsible cooler once in the room. As long as we waited the 5mins between drinks, we could keep ordering at the same bar. The bartenders knew what we were doing and just kept bringing them until we hit our max limit :-)

That's correct.

Although it shouldn't, this seems to vary. We were on the Valor in July and planned to tour OSJ and board late (ship leaves at 10 pm but you can usually board by noon) so we wanted to purchase Cheers on the second day. We were told even if we purchased it on the second day we would be charged from the first day and any drinks we had that first day would be retroactively applied to the Cheers program. In the end we boarded earlier and purchased it the first day. Unfortunately, the program didn't really work out for us as we barely broke even. Like a PP said, I was drinking the frozen, fruity drinks and got full to the point that I didn't feel like drinking any more. It was also a very port-intensive cruise and we tried to "catch up" each day when we came back on board from the port.

One poster said he liked it because 'his wife didn't know how much he drank'. Wrong... all bar transactions get tracked (they are counting toward your 15 drink limit), and shown with $0 on the S&S account.

They *have* to track the drinks in order to enforce the limit, and in case you dispute whether you did/didn't have all 15. They are time stamped, which keeps you from ordering a drink on Lido 5 minutes before you get one in the casino, or from ordering from two different bars in order to share the account with someone else.
