I just booked our cruise for May 23, 2014 Vancouver-Alaska-Vancouver. There are 3 cruising days. My DH is not wanting to do the formal nights so we will be at the Lido on those dates no problem. I would like to book the PG for one night in advance but want to make sure it is not on the formal night...will there be 1 or 2 formal nights and any idea which ones? Here is our itinerary:

FRI 23MAY14 Sail from Vancouver, B.C., CA 5:00pm

SAT 24MAY14 Scenic Cruising The InsidePassage 1

SUN 25MAY14 Juneau, Alaska, US 1:00pm 10:00pm

MON 26MAY14 Skagway, Alaska, US 7:00am 9:00pm

TUE 27MAY14 Scenic Cruising Tracy Arm 1 7:00am 4:00pm

WED 28MAY14 Ketchikan, Alaska, US 10:00am 6:00pm

THU 29MAY14 Scenic Cruising The InsidePassage 1

FRI 30MAY14 Debark Ship Vancouver, B.C., CA 7:00am

Thanks!

Are formal evening always on "At Sea" days?

To piggyback on the original question, we will be on the Statendam Aug 10-Aug 17. "At Sea" days are Aug 11 and Aug 16. Might they be formal evenings?

(DH also does not want to pack a jacket, so I thought we could try the Italian restaurant one evening and either the Lido or room service the other)

I marked the nights that are the obvious for formal night.

That being said, it is not 'carved in stone' and can vary by Captain/Hotel Manager/Seattle's choices.

Sometimes they are on port days when it is an early departure. On your cruise they will most likely be the 11th and 15th, but as sail said, they aren't carved in stone.

Another question - at what point will we know when the formal evenings are? Pre-cruise? Or upon boarding?

On boarding they will listed in the first daily On Location - but on a longer cruise they can still change due to unplanned circumstances. Edited by jtl513

thank you for the replies :)

Our anniversary is the 24th so I will see if I can convince him to dress up a bit so we can go to the PG that night...Will get he be able to get into the PG on formal night with a dress shirt, tie and dress pants or should we just save it for a different night?

HAL defines formal night for the gentlemen as jacket, shirt and tie.

Would your DH be seated without a jacket on formal night in Pinnacle? Maybe is the best answer. HAL is inconsistent with enforcement. He well could be turned away OR he could be seated. Same holds for Main Dining Room.

If he wants to know for sure he will be seated, he needs a jacket and tie.
