Union Station to San Pedro

I'm hoping someone in the area can advise me on the transit service from Union Station. We're stay at the Queen Mary and will rent a car for the day.

 

We're arriving at 5:30AM on Monday 2/17/13 on Amtrak and Enterprise in San Pedro doesn't open until 8 so we have time to kill and thought we'd try public transit to get to San Pedro. We travel light with just carry-ons and backpacks so that shouldn't be an issue.

 

As I look at the transit maps it appears we could take the silver line to the Harbor Gateway Transit Center then change to the 450 bus to SP.

 

Is this correct? Also the transit map seems to have the silver line ending at the Artisia Transit Center. The timetable says Harbor Gateway: is that nearby or the same thing?

You could rent your car from the Enterprise at Los Angeles. They will pick you up from Union Station. The fee for dropping off in San Pedro is only $25.

The only down side is that they don't open up until 8am also. Are you coming on the Sunset Limited? Have you checked the on-time rate? If they are running late, you won't have a long time to wait for Enterprise to open. You could also take the Purple or Purple Line transferring at the 7th Street Metro Station. Find the 450 at NW corner Flower and 7th.

To ride the metro you will need to purchase a TAP card ($1, reloadable at the kiosk).

It is kindof an honor system There are TAP stantions either at the bus platforms or in front of the turnstiles. These need to be tapped with your card at every transfer, whether you have a day pass ($5) or buying each leg as you go. We find it's easier to purchase the day rate.

(Do not know your age but there is a Senior Rate that is only available to seniors over a certain age who have the senior card. Took Mom 6 weeks to get her card.)

 

Monday 2/17 is a legal holiday so there won't be as much usage on the metro as there normally would be.

 

Be aware that this is an urban route. It carries a wide variety of humanity. The Harbor Gateway Center is in an interesting area. Keep your wits about you. The 7th Street Metro Station is in the middle of downtown. That being said we have never had a problem traveling on other routes in equally interesting areas.

 

The only reliable bathrooms on the route are in Union Station.

Forgot to add--

 

February is in the start of our rainy season.

 

The Silver Line at Union Station and the Harbor Gateway are both outside.

The Red and Purple Lines at Union Station are underground as is the 7th Street Station. Though you would need to catch the 450 from the street.

 

The TAP card monies are good for all lines on the Metro system. At the kiosk you do not have to buy tix for a certain route.

Thanks so much, exactly the information I was looking for. If the weather's bad I guess we could take the metro to Long Beach and get a cab to San Pedro.

The Transit Center in Long Beach is also open air and rarely see a taxi there.

 

You can arrange supershuttle/execucar or another shuttle service to meet you at Union Station.

Take a few minutes looking around Union Station. It was the last great Terminal station to be built. Truly a gem in our city.

They used to let people sleep in and did not kick them off the train at the 5:30 arrival. Not sure it is still true.
