Need some help with Naples and hotels

We gave Naples a second chance in November 2013. We walked from the cruise port to train station, then, after return from Herculaneum, from train station to archeological museum then somewhat circuitously back to port. There is wonderful architecture and some grand old buildings but what is most striking is the garbage. Literally piles everywhere as well as tons of litter. And no one seems to know how to pick up after a dog. It is hard to enjoy the scenery when you have to constantly watch where you step.

It is one thing to look past decay of old buildings. It is another when the city can't seem to cope with basic sanitation. I don't see us returning to Naples on any future trip.

Huh---when we were there last summer we didn't see any of this.....

It is just a matter of timing. If you are unfortunate to be in Naples during one of their, too frequent, garbage strikes, then you will see lots of garbage piled in many places. If you there when they do allow the garbage collections to proceed all will be well. The garbage strike problem is a well known (and publicized problem in Italy) and seems to an issue without a good solution.

Wikipedia has an interesting article on the Naples garbage collection situation, but it does not mention much about the Mafia involvement in the situation.

..... and a matter of whereabouts in Naples.

Take the train from Sorrento to see its grim side. Then walk the back streets between station and port, & you'll leave with a very poor impression of the city. The rest of Italy does regard its citizens as having no pride in their city.

I've seen occasional words of praise for the city on this forum, and I'm sure there are much better parts.

But there are so many wonderful places within easy striking distance that despite a land vacation based at Ravello & cruises to Naples, I've never been tempted to look for the better side of Naples.
