San Fran Hotel

If you want to do any touring in the city you are better off getting a hotel in town. SFO is about 45min from downtown. You could take BART into the city but you will spend time and money riding public transit. There are 2 hopon hopoff bus companies that offer quick 'tours' of the sights. San Francisco is very compact - do your research and decide what you want to see. Public buses are inexpensive and many run frequently.

The cruise terminal is right in the city by a lot of tourist attractions. If you want to see Alcatraz make reservations as the tickets can sell out.

Look for a hotel in the area of Fishermans Wharf...

You will be in a nice area, close (walking distance, public transport or quick cab) to most tourist sights, lots of restaurants in the area, nice touristy places to walk...and very close to the ship...

Only stay near SFO if you are on your way home and have an early flight...it's a rather sterile industrial area...lots of very generic hotels, not at all close to The City or to the ship...Yes, you can take BART in to The City, but so much more convenient and so much nicer to be IN The City--especially if you have some time and want to see the sights and experience The City...

The airport hotels are nice but isolated. In most you are stuck eating meals in the hotel as there is no place to walk to.

At the wharf there is a lot to see and do. Three different double decker tour bus companies all start their trips at the wharf, plus the ferry to Alcatraz, cable car, etc. Easy walk to the cruise ship pier although luggage may require a short cab ride.
