Thanks again for all of the compliments on blog! The rest will be posted later tonight hopefully:)

The Posh pass is a pass allowing you access to the Haven's sun deck( not the area with the pools) they have padded lounge chairs, sunbeds, and clamshell chairs,as well as a bar. The servers come around and mist spray you occasionally and offer fruit skewers, and you can order from a small menu from the Epic Club restaurant, but they don't advertise it,you have to ask. It's $59 for the week. They also have these same padded chairs(all three versions) at the front of deck 18 for free,so you can get access to a quiet deck with nice chairs, but no bar service of course, and you are not by the pool. In Posh, you can watch the entertainment on deck 15 below, and the elevator takes you right to the outdoor buffet so you are close for additional food. However, they only have a few passes every week,so people advise getting to the port early to get one. As I said earlier in my blog, I got there ridiculously early, but it paid off, and I spent the extra time I would have at the hotel on board the ship:)

Day 6- Sea Day

When I woke up today,I was feeling MUCH better. My skin was still feeling pretty fried,so I decided to make it an indoor day. This would be easy as I had a few inside activities already planned.

I headed back to the buffet for breakfast, ate at my La Cucina hideaway, and spent the next couple of hours at the spa.

I'll add in here my thoughts re:Posh and Spa passes, since I'm sure you all want to hear about me reading on the tile loungers some more LOL. I know it may seem extravagant to have purchased both, but I feel like I can make an argument for each. I've posted above about the Posh

pass details,so I'll discuss the spa here...it includes access to three saunas(two in the public area and one in each genders locker room), alongside with the aromatherapy steam baths(one in the public area, one in the locker room). There are also regular showers. In the public room, there are padded loungers and of course the heated tile loungers, and the giant hydrotherapy pool with the lounger at one end with jets underneath, little cubbies with jets, and three large fountains in the middle. There are also two jacuzzi at either end. Finally, there is a balcony with padded loungers so you can watch the aft view and wake.

So which pass would I get if you can only splurge for one? Honestly,I would have a hard time choosing. Each pass serves a different purpose. Posh give you comfortable, quiet access in the sun, with access to food and drink, and it's close to the pool entertainment, music, etc. It can be a social atmosphere. The spa is quieter, more mellow, and a good place to retreat in the evening,on cooler days,or when you are sunburned/sun sick. It also has the pool and jacuzzi that I would be willing to bet are a lot cleaner than the ones outside. The posh pass is cheaper than the spa,but then you can probably get away with using deck 18 to have the same type of lounges, just no bar access, where as there is no real substitute for the spa area(unless you have an aft balcony). So,in the end, I say I can't choose...it depends on what is more important to you. It also depends on the itinerary of the particular cruise- I'd never purchase either of these on a European itinerary, as you would never break even on the cost- and how much activity you plan to do on the cruise...if you don't plan on relaxing a lot,I would be hesitant to purchase both, and go towards the one you see yourself using more.

Ok,now I'm done with that spiel....back to day 6!

At 12, I left the spa and headed for the Spiegel Tent for the murder mystery lunch. Ironically,I had the same table I had for the Cirque show, and the people at the table were more chatty,so I was content. The show wasn't quite what I was expecting..the same 5 second city actors came out, presented an identity and acted out a couple of scenes before calling on audience members to "decide" who would be killed. Based on the crowds reaction, they killed off the selected actor, and then took a break while they served the main course. About 20 minutes later they came back, did a few other skits, drawing in audience members into a couple of skits, then had the tables come up with a "detective agency name" and choose who they thought the killer was...and then left again for dessert to be served. I guess it was a way for the table members to chat. Then they came back and went around the room, asking people's opinions, and then they revealed the killer, and that was that!

Overall,it was interesting, glad I tried it but wouldn't do it again. The other thing..I'm not one to complain about meals but this time, the meal truly sucked. They had a small salad, a leg of chicken, potato, and a donut for dessert. They had a choice between the meat and salmon. I'm not a huge salmon fan,but probably should have tried it,as the meat was not great. I barely touched it,figuring I'd grab someone later.the only problem was, this whole production took two hours, with the actors leaving for a half hour every time something was served,so by the time I left,it was 2:30... and the martini clinic was at 3.

Needless to say, i didn't have time to get anything else in between the two activities. I stopped by the casino cashier on my way to Shakers, as I was hosting the slot pull immediately following the tasting, and this was the one event I'll admit my knowledge was sketchy. Since i knew I was likely to be inebriated after it, I simply asked the cashier what was the best action plan was. She told me to come back at the selected time and she would walk the group through it.

Feeling a bit better about the slot pull,I headed back to Shakers. This soon proved to be challenging,as the middle of the hallway on dck 7 was JAM packed with people. Apparently, there was some sort of watch giveaway or sale, and from the looks of it, it was the deal of the century or something. Think Walmart on Black Friday, and you'll get the idea of the type of crowd I had to navigate through JUST TO GET TO THE OTHER END OF THE DECK!!! I had to repeatedly reassure the vultures that I was merely trying to walk somewhere, not cut in front of them for their treasures.A warning to all future cruisers...stay away from deck 7 when this sale occurs!

Once at Shakers, I tried to find an area for a number of people to meet. This was getting difficult,as other peop,e were heading in and claiming chairs, tables and couches. I had about 35 people sign up,wasn't sure how many would show, but I wanted to have space for at least a third of that. Then, as the clock crept towards 3, and I was alone, I began to worry that no one would show.

Thankfully,at 2:55, the RTW roll call member came by with another solo traveler. From there, more people trickled in,and we managed to wrangle some chairs into a semi circle by one of the posts. Trying to be a good hostess, I ended up sitting on the arms of two chairs, allowing for more members to sit. By the time the bartender started the clinic at 3:15, we had about 9 people, plus two more who came in(Embarkation M/D) who sat at the other end of the room since space was crowded.

And now its time for the martinis! First up was a sour lemon one...didn't take more than a sip. The next six were all dessert flavors, all mixed with "low fat vanilla ice cream" so they were very creamy. I remember a key lime one that wasn't bad, a mint chocolate one that tasted like a melted Andes mint candy, another lemon one that was a bit better than the first,a cherry one,an amaretto one,and I think the chocolate one was the last I can recall......Very heavy drinks!

ga3e2yhy.jpg

My favorite!

Our group had a blast though, making fun of the drinks and chatting about the cruise. Shortly into the discussion,we began comparing cruise lines, and the discussion even turned to these wonderful forums;-). Since a couple of the people there were from the solo group, not necessarily RC members, there was a bit of explaining how Cruise Critic worked....and there were a few interesting moments when several of us all recalled the same posters who tended to be more negative another NCL and the Epic....

Ok,stepping out of that hornets nest now!

Anyway, I did to walk over to Embarkation M/D after the second or third martini, and stayed there for the next round (or two...) at some point, I know the two of them, along with others in the other section, planned to go to the slot pull, and we all noticed that the time was getting closer as the martinis kept coming. However,by the time it finished, it was about 20 minutes passed the start time. Yikes! This was probably my biggest faux pas as a hostess, but since we only had ten people signed up,and it seemed like everyone was there,I didn't get too anxious about it. When we got downstairs, there was only one person waiting for us.(if anyone else from my roll call did show up and leave, please accept my apologies. I had no idea the martini clinic would be so long).

I was especially thankful that I had approached the casino planner person ahead of time,as I couldn't think straight, nor could anyone else. The planner led us to a slot machine and told us where to put the bills in and how many times to hit the button. I think we were all on autopilot, honestly. Needless to say, we won nothing, until the last person went ,and basically won $3. Since she had the highest pull, she more or less kept her initial investment. All in all,it was over in less than ten minutes.

As our group split up,one of the other RC members and I noticed that the waves outside the window seemed particularly high.We commented on it,stating we didn't know if they were real,or if it was the martinis!

I headed back to my cabin for a bit,and found a message from another solo RC member, saying that she had reservations for La Cucina that night and inviting me. It was close to the time I was scheduled to go see the second city, but I wanted to try La Cucina,so I accepted. I also found another complimentary plate of treats,so i was able to have something to snack on in the meantime I rested a bit, then wandered the stores for a little while before meeting her at La Cucina. The martini buzz had worn off,and I was still pretty hungry,so was eager to try out the Italian food!

azu6aruq.jpg

Our server was probably the nicest I encountered on the cruise, and kept encouraging us to get more than one appetizer, entree, etc. I had the bruschetta, lasagna and a smaller plate of meatballs. The lasagna was pretty heavy on the meat ratio,as opposed to the cheese and sauce,so I was glad to have the other entree of meatballs and pasta. I had the tiramisu for dessert, which was exquisite, but too rich to finish it all. We had a good time, comparing cruise notes, and she told me of her scuba diving adventures(she had shown the solo group a video of finding an octopus while diving before...pretty cool).

Once dinner was over, I went back to the cabin, intending to catch the latest second city show, but as soon as I got back,I began to feel queasy. It didn't take long to figure out why...the ship was ROCKING! I was surprised I didn't notice it that much on La Cucina, since it's forward as well, but maybe it had picked up in that short amount of time. Whatever it was,I will say it was the most motion I've ever noticed on seven cruises, and I don't usually get seasick. The closet door kept sliding open and shut throughout the night. The only thing that made it more tolerable was to lie flat in bed, which is what I did. Thus,it was another early night....

Day 7- Nassau/Ship Day

So today we are in Nassau, where I have been on two prior cruises, and I'm sure some other Caribbean cruise will bring me by here again. I elected not to leave the ship today,as the beaches near the port are not the best (as of last year), I've been to Atlantis, and I had no interest in wading through the aggressive salespeople at the market by the end of the pier. Instead, my plan was to continue using my Posh and spa passes on the empty ship.

I did wake up feeling much better, and the ship was sailing smoothly as we approach Nassau(due there at noon). I decided to try out a MDR for breakfast today, and headed to Taste. When I arrived, and asked for a table by myself, I was led to a table waayyy at the back of the room, jammed in between two large tables. I had seen a smaller table for two in a much better spot, and asked if I could have that one instead. The server looked pained and said that section was closed(made no sense since every table around it was filled with people). She then led me to the other side of the room, where there were several two tops open, and started talking frantically to another server. After a few minutes, she let me sit at one,and I thanked her for not sticking me at the back of the other room,in a crowd.

As I sat there, looking at the menu, I saw the server for my area walk by me,glare, and run over to the server station nearby. I saw him arguing with another server and a hostess for a while, all the time looking at me. I started to get uncomfortable, and was considering leaving when they sent another server over to take my order. He seemed a bit baffled that I was by myself, and asked if I wanted to move to another table with people. I declined, saying that I was fine by myself at the moment, and was content with my iPad to read while I ate.

He accepted this and went to place my order.

About a half an hour later, the hostess came by and asked how I was. I said fine, and continued to wait,no sign of food, drink, etc in sight. I was starting to get annoyed,as it wasn't crowded, and I had seen groups come in,be seated nearby, and get their food before me. Finally,my food came...I did pig out here and got French toast and eggs Benedict for my last cruise breakfast, and I do have to say,it was the best breakfast I had had on the cruise,so that made up for the strange treatment somewhat. During my meal, the hostess came by and asked how everything was again. When I said I was fine, she told me that she had "hoped someone was coming in to join me before I ate" What?!?! I didn't know if she meant that they would have set another solo with me if one had happened to come in,or if they thought I was pretending to be alone and really waiting for someone....very strange.

I know that I've read on some boards, mostly the solo cruiser boards, that some solos have asked to be seated with others in MDRs, and have received odd looks for requesting such a thing. Well, let it be known that NCL does try to accommodate that, I suppose, but I do have to say that they did make me feel a bit awkward being alone,so despite the good meal,I don't think I would venture here again on my own.

After that strange meal, I decided that my day of inside seclusion was enough for my skin(turning brown now) so I headed straight for Posh. Sadly, it was very very windy up here, and the only other one out was one of the women I had met several times before,C (who was part of the slide group from sea day 2). We chatted for a bit as the bar staff got set up. I had hoped to lounge up here through the sail into Nassau, but about 20 minutes in,when I felt a few random drops, I concluded that that wasn't meant to be. Back to the spa !

(see, these are the times the spa pass comes in handy:) )

Upon my arrival to the spa,I decided I hadn't spent nearly enough money on this cruise(so not true). Actually, they did have decent specials for that day-for them- so I booked a 40 minute full body massage for $79. I went into the spa and lounged for a bit on the aft deck, where it was shielded from the wind, until it was massage time. Luckily, I was able to watch us back into our slot in Nassau before it was time to go.

ebadajuv.jpg

The massage was great! My therapist used some type of oil,and aromatherapy and of course had the new age music going. I think it actually lasted a little over 40 minutes, and she didn't even try to sell me any crap,er, I mean, spa products. After the massage, she even let me go onto the balcony off the room and look at the view for a hit while she got me some water. I saw that we were right next to a Disney ship, and watched some people on the water coaster on their ship for a few.

uva5ybyr.jpg

The Disney ship

The therapist led me through a shortcut back to the spa, where I stayed for another hour, since i noticed it was still cool and windy. Around 2, I wanted to attempt to get some more sun,so I went back to Posh. It was very empty here,as it was still pretty cool. I greeted Gede, got a drink and chatted with him for a few. He said he didn't foresee the weather getting any better, sadly. I ordered some lunch from their menu and lounged on one of the clamshell loungers, watching the action on the pier. We also overlooked a Carnival ship, which was virtually empty.da3epudu.jpg

I had debated getting off the ship to eat lunch at Señor Frogs, which, despite the overflow of alcohol and games, has pretty good Mexican food. I decided against it after eating,as I really didn't want to leave the ship, and technically still had a LOT left of my UBP that I hadn't used,so couldn't justify buying a drink over there if I had lunch.

Sad that it's so cold!

ynaze5y3.jpg

Anyway, after my meal on Posh,I figured I ignored the goosebumps long enough,so I found myself back in the spa for the remainder of the afternoon/early evening. I left right before sail way, hoping that it was at least calmer,if not warm, and to have a final drink up there.

I stopped by the buffet, which was just getting started for dinner. I wasn't super hungry yet,but I wandered by the chocolate buffet set up,and couldn't resist....I'm sure I looked like an absolute pig, with my samples of all of the treats, but as I ran into a RC member(who had been at the martini clinic), she assured me it doesn't count on vacation...LOL!

e9ypehut.jpg

I took my treats up to the clamshell chair I had occupied earlier, and gobbled up my desserts along with a final drink from Gede. I slipped him a $10 for his service all week, and he seemed appreciative. I did stay up here during sail away and watched the Epic glide smoothly into the ocean. Sadly, the Disney ship must have departed before I made it up there,so I missed the infamous Disney song horn.

After sail way, there were only a few other people up there, and the bar was packed up,so I ventured back inside to my cabin. I packed up,figuring I would get it out of the way. I had missed the final solo meeting, but since I hadn't really attended them through the week,I wasn't too broken up about it. I did wandered through the lounge after packing to take a few pictures, and ran into a couple of the younger solo girls chatting. They invited me over, and we chatted for a bit,and planned to meet for Battle of the Sexes show later.

I walked around deck 15 for a bit and oddly enough, ended up at Spice, where I had a few of their appetizers for dinner...beef empanadas and chicken satay skewers. They were good, and just enough for me at that moment.

After that, I walked around inside a bit and met up with the other girls at Bliss. I bought a round of drinks for the five of us,which amazingly enough, the bartender put on my UBP at once. The solo director,Chandra, talked several of us into signing up for the game. We drank our liquid courage and filled out the slots. Afterwards, I learned that we just entered a raffle to be selected for the game. Thankfully, only one of the girls in the group was selected,so I was relieved!

The show was funny,as they had each group perform little acts, like passing hula hoops to each other and dressing in a shirt. When they got to the karaoke part,I was super glad I hadn't been picked. The poor girl who had been picked glared at us from the stage.

When the show was over, I suggested going to the second city show that I had missed the night before. The others agreed,so we managed to slip into Headliners and find a group of empty seats. Much like the other night,it was skit based. It was okay for something to do,but not overly funny. I did see people leaving midway through the show.

Once it was over, the group split up,as some people had to pack, others went to guest services to settle their bills, and some others went to Osheehans. I wasn't hungry,so I planned to go back to my cabin, but wandered by Shakers,so I decided to get one final martini. One of the other RC members walked by,having just tried the ice bar, so he came over and had a martini "to warm up." I had tried out the ice bar in May,so had no desire to go again. As I told him, I was heading back to an ice bar of my own tomorrow LOL.

After the martini, I knew it was time for bed, since I was doing self disembarkation in the morning to catch a 12pm flight! I ran into one of the women from the earlier group on the way back, who I planned to share a taxi cab with the next morning, since she was on the same flight as me. We planned to meet outside the lounge at 8, and went our separate ways. Then it was time for my final night sleeping on the Epic!

Day 8- time to go home

Sadly, I could tell we were back in Miami as soon as i woke up. Besides noticing the lack of movement, I saw that the signal on my phone read Sprint,so I knew we were in port. I was up about a half hour before my wake up call,so I decided to forgo getting more sleep and get ready. Luckily, with the extra time, I went to OSheehans for a final breakfast. This time, the omelet was piping hot,and the bakery basket was good as well. I did notice the lines of people stacking up and the sea of luggage,so when I went back to my cabin, I gathered my items and decided to wait outside the lounge in hopes that my taxi mate was early.

Thankfully, she was,and I saw her inside the lounge at 730. Since she was on the 12th floor, we decided to take separate elevators down and meet on deck 6. Then I went to the elevator, found about 8-10 people and their luggage waiting. I decided to be patient, but when two full elevators passed with people screaming at us not to attempt to get on, I decided to follow another couple down the stairs. This was interesting, with one full suitcase,a carryon,my pea coat and purse. I shamelessly rolled the beast down ten flights of stairs, banging all the way. Two things made this process less horrifying-my bags, thankfully, took the banging with gusto, and the handle stayed intact(and this luggage has been on three international trips prior to this,so it wasn't new). Second, there were about 20 other people doing the same thing with large suitcases, duffel bags, etc. The stairwells were quite loud that morning.

Once I was on deck 6, I found a spot by the entertainment desk and filled out my customs form while waiting for T. After awhile, watching the growing line, I began to wonder if she took the back elevators. A few minutes later, she called me from the line...she somehow snagged an elevator and got into line, thinking I would find her there. She explained to the group of people behind her in line that she was waiting for me, and luckily they didn't grip about me jumping into line with her. From that point,it was about ten minutes until we reached the door, swiped our cards for the last time, and we were back in the terminal.

It took about another ten minutes until we wound our way through the terminal, went through customs, and found ourselves outside. We headed for the taxi line, and just as we got in the end of it, a guy approached us,asking if we were willing to split a ride to MIA. Since it would be cheaper for us in the end,we agreed. A few minutes later, it was our turn for a cab. However, when we explained that we were going to different airlines(the guy was at Delta) the cabbie tried to insist it was going to cost more. Now, I knew that the fare was $24 from POM to MIA,so I argued that with him, saying that going to a gate a few hundred feet away didn't rate a higher charge. We refused to go with him,and asked for another cab. There was a bit of confusion for a minute,as one of the taxi hailers wanted us to get back in line, but we argued that the guy was trying to rip us off. Finally, the original hailer got us another cab. Once we loaded into this cab,the driver again tried to say it was more to stop at toe airlines. I flat out told him that if he wanted to charge more,he wasn't getting a tip.He shut up at that point.

I have to say,I'm pretty familiar with NYC cabbies, and know their tricks, but these Miami cabbies are ruthless!

Anyway, we pulled up at the American terminal first,so we left our share with the guy and departed as the cabbie tried to convince him that it wasn't a bad walk to the Delta terminal.

Once inside,it was a MESS...MIA is an American hub,and there were several counters before we found the one that we could check in at. My poor bag was overweight by 3lbs,but the agent said nothing, so it got by,yay! Then it was onto security, and we were in one of the longer security lines I've been in, at least the whole process of disembarking and getting to the airport was quick, and we were actually there three hours prior to our flight.

We wandered around the terminal for a bit before the flight, stopped by Starbucks, went into a Hudson news store. I charged up my phone and downloaded another episode of a show to watch on the plane while T caught up with people at home. We were dreading the return,as the reports stated it was snowing back in Hartford.

Just before it was time to board, I couldn't resist the pizza restaurant across from our gate,so I got a slice and finished in time to board.T was a coupe, of rows ahead of me,so we parted and I settled into my aisle seat. There was an empty seat in the middle,so it made it a bit more comfy. Thanks to my flight fear meds, I was pretty out of it and slept most of the flight, waking up in time for us to bounce through the snow clouds as we landed.

And that was my trip, peeps! I know, not as exciting as others, and if you've read my Mediterranean review,I definitely wasn't as social or into the nightlife as much on this sailing, but that's just kind of how it rolled. As others have said, each cruise is different, and each group of people a different. I did enjoy the people I met,and have a good time, even if it was more mellow.i did feel like, between the two cruises,I got to sample everything that Epic has to offer.

Would I cruise Epic again? At this point,maybe...only because I've done this ship twice, and I don't really have a desire to do the western med, since I've done 3 cruises on this route. I would like to try the BA or GA,or another ship. It really depends on the time and itinerary. I wouldn't be opposed to doing the Epic again if I went with others, but I think I'm done with her as a solo traveler.

Please ask any lingering questions! I know the Eastern Caribbean route is obsolete now,but willing to answer any questions about the ship,or the ports for those on GA.

Thanks to everyone who has viewed this and posted their compliments!! I appreciate the feedback, and encourages me to keep writing about future trips!

OH I almost forgot the most important review...the UBP!

Now,as I said before, I am not an alcoholic-sad that everyone who purchases this package feels the need to defend themselves, but it is what it is. Due to the inflated prices of mixed drinks, I have spent $300-$400 before on 5 day Carnival cruises...granted I was usually with someone, so some of that was buying two drinks, but I figured that on a seven day cruise where I planned to spend 4 days on the ship, I would break even with the package.

Not so.

The first two days, I had probably close to the daily charge, only by having about 4-5 mixed drinks and sodas(big soda drinker). However,a few things occurred that limited my drinking as the cruise went on. I ended up not going out late at night for a majority of the cruise, which eliminated several drinks I had anticipated right there. After the second sea day, I got a bad sunburn, and after the first port day, I over drank on the island, both of which left me feeling run down midweek, which also eliminated my alcohol intake. Even when I started to feel better, the sun/heat, and ships motion left me not in the mood for more than one drink during the day, plus i went to two martini clinics that also sufficed for my alcohol limit for those days. also, I had two bottles of wine and a bottle of champagne in the room that I used at times, limiting drinks from the bars.

So,basically, even though I continued to drink Pepsi, I ended up spending about $200 in drinks and soda for the week.

The bottom line? I guess I'm glad I tried it out,but it didn't even come close for me. I think the moral for me is,in the future, most likely I might come close to the total of the UBP if I were feeling well,or with a companion. But still, that wouldn't make the UBP worth it for me. I can't see spending a large amount over it the make it a deal. My other goal with it,to try out different drinks was also moot,as I only ventured from my usual drinks once or twice, even knowing that I "could." I also am not into brands of liquor,so I never tried to test out the call brands.

But at least now I know it,so I won't waste money on it in the future.i can't say if it's worthy it or not for others, as I staunchly defended it pre-cruise. I think it depends on each individual case. But I would caution others to factor in the possibility of illness, fatigue, other sources of alcohol outside the bar(gift bottles, clinics, cocktail parties) when considering it. Anyway, that was my experience, and my two cents on the topic!

Wow! What an amazing review!

So great to hear another solo female perspective.

I am cruising solo on Epic in July and am very much excited about :D It's my 2nd solo but my first NCL!

I had thought about trying to get a posh pass or spa pass myself but I feel it would probably be a waste of money with such a port intensive cruise in the med (even though there are a couple of port days I plan to spend on-board. I might just have to save my pennies and spend them on a couple of spa treatments instead ;) I remember you saying that Posh was $59 but how much was the Spa Pass again?

As for the UBP, I appreciate you perspective on it. I can absolutely understand that what one might plan to drink on-board might not actually be drunk depending on daily circumstance. That being said - I'm a Scottish Girl who like a good few cocktails in an evening :D So i'm thinking that UPB would be worth it for me.

I will see if I can think of any burning questions to ask

Hi Stacey,

I followed along on your "live" review - I'm going on my first solo cruise on Epic at the end of March; your review provided a great perspective for me! I'm even contemplating doing the mad-dash to the port first to score a Posh pass :)

To book the “formal “ meet and greet for your cruise, just have someone contact NCL and set it up. Its usually at 11 on the first sea day,and the officers come and they usuallyserve pastries and coffee.

Would you happen to remember what number you called to set this up? My Roll Call is trying to do this, but haven't had any luck so far...

Thanks!!
