13cheermom Posted January 21, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 21, 2014 When leaving out of Port of Miami, do you prefer flying into Fort Lauderdale or Miami airport? And why do you prefer one over the other and are there any advantages that you've experienced? Have read a lot of people do prefer FLL, curious as to why? Thanks for any past experiences with either airport, first time leaving from this port. :)
irishnyc Posted January 21, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 21, 2014 FLL is a much smaller and easier to navigate airport.
vniemo2 Posted January 21, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 21, 2014 FLL is a little less hectic and normally cheaper for us to fly into.
KenMo Posted January 21, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 21, 2014 I prefer FLL over MIA. I've always found the price to be cheaper flying into FLL. Plus, last time I was at MIA...it was a freakin' zoo.
Ontario_Cruiser Posted January 21, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 21, 2014 I have always flown to FLL and only because of cost. I have found that Southwest tends to be a cheaper option, and with them I can save at least $100 each - and sometimes much more. With a family of six, this really adds up and more than pays for the cost of the shuttle to the port.

All things considered we'll opt for the cheaper airport, but if price is equal we'll always opt for FLL.
13cheermom Posted January 21, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted January 21, 2014 Okay thanks, right now airfare is cheaper for us at Miami. Southwest schedule isn't available yet since its mid Oct. But I thought transport from FLL would be more than from MIA also. Guess I'll just have to wait and see what Southwest airfare is. We always fly at least a day prior to cruise, just hadn't used this port before. :)
wantocruisemore Posted January 21, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 21, 2014 Prefer FLL because it's cheaper, smaller and less hectic. Plus, when coming home the planes normally do not have to wait on the runway so long prior to take off.
NeedBlueWater Posted January 21, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 21, 2014 I've only been to each airport once but when flying into Mia in October it was quick and efficient. We loved being able to check in for the cruise at the airport. The taxis were waiting and the ride to the port was short and sweet. Things may be different for our cruise next month with it being high season for travel and cruises.
13cheermom Posted January 21, 2014 Author #10 Share Posted January 21, 2014 Thanks so much. we also will be traveling in October, so hopefully it won't be too crowded. Overall I would just like a non-stop inexpensive flight, which right now is going to MIA. Will wait and see when Southwest posts their fares. lablover61 Posted January 21, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 21, 2014 We have never had any problems with MIA. Plenty of taxi's , inexpensive from MIA to POM too. I would only consider FLL if it was considerably cheaper , which it never has been.

LWiening Posted January 21, 2014 #13 Share Posted January 21, 2014 WE normally fly into FLL but it depends on the airlines where we can find the best deal.
LostPuppy Posted January 21, 2014 #14 Share Posted January 21, 2014 We always use MIA as cost is not really a consideration for us. As we just have carry-on we avoid the baggage carousel hassle too. Just an FYI this thread will probably be moved (wrong forum, this thread has nothing to do with Carnival).
matfel Posted January 21, 2014 #15 Share Posted January 21, 2014 We flew Detroit to Miami last AUgust, it was great, free shuttle to our hotel, no problems at all, for us it was a direct flight and was cheaper then Fort Lauderdale, This year again, just booked our direct flights to Miami, after the cruise, jump in a cab and we were at the airport in minutes, Price is a big factor for people , for us Miami was cheaper for some reason

Miami has a Carnival check in at the airport, so that may be faster that the port as well. MIA is much larger than FLL, but still easy to navigate. Also most of the economy airlines don't fly into MIA. It really just boils down to a person preference.

snow bunny Posted January 22, 2014 #19 Share Posted January 22, 2014 It was $300pp cheaper to fly into MIA for our cruise out of FLL. So a transfer fee of $60/trip still leaves me with money in the bank! I will let you know how it all works out after we get back in March!:) snow bunny
