commander courageous Posted February 9, 2014 #1 Share Posted February 9, 2014 A painful virus, Chikungunya fever, similar to dengue and first seen on the French side of St. Martin, has now spread to other countries, infecting about 4,000. The disease causes high fever and muscle pain and while painful, rarely causes death, though its effects of joint pain sometimes lasts for months. So far the disease has been detected on the BVI, Dominica, French Guiana, Guadeloupe and St. Barths. Local governments are undertaking fogging efforts and attempting to eradicate standing water, to reduce the number of mosquito carriers. While news accounts suggest tourism has not been affected as yet, travelers should be aware of the presence of mosquitoes and apply repellents. Lucky us, we arrive in islands on just 6 days!
